The Spirit Of STEM For Females
8 reasons why I feel that females from all backgrounds should pursue a career or side-hustle in STEM
What is STEM?
According to CodeWizardsHQ, STEM is an abbreviation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Nowadays, STEM education deeply focuses on preparing children for a future in which digital devices are prominent in ones life, so that they'll grasp the new world around them. Even though there are many ways to get females involved in STEM programs and activities, one of the most common ways for females to participate in STEM programs and activities is to study coding and build phenomenal things like websites, online games, and apps. Back in the day, females were denied opportunities to practice STEM-based activities, so it's vital for women in the modern world to have the freedom to practice STEM on a full-time, part-time, or casual basis.
From my perspective, gender diversity in the workforce is just as crucial as inclusion for people with disabilities and cultural diversity. As a result of pushing more females to pursue careers in STEM, there has been more female scientists, mathematicians, technological professionals and engineers than ever before.
The benefits of females pursuing careers and/or side-hustles in the field of STEM
Besides breaking gender-based barriers in the workplace, there are multiple advantages of pursuing careers or side-hustles in the field of STEM. Here are 8 reasons why more females should choose side-hustles and careers in STEM!
1. Increases self-confidence
Because of the generalization that females aren't able to learn science and mathematics, they are likely to have a strong dislike for math and science, and have a lack of interest towards them. Females can also completely lose inspiration and confidence in math and science.
Even females who are considered gifted in math and science believe that they are the opposite. Males assume that they're better in math and science.
Such a negative attitude can cause girls to have behavior problems, waste time, and, when it's time for them to decide what they want to do in the future, they're less likely to study math and science.
With that said, if females would participate in STEM activities and programs at a young age alongside males, they would be more likely to become interested in math and science later on in life.
2. Provides a sense of satisfaction
Many STEM careers provide workdays that are stimulating, and fulfilling. The work days are filled with research, analyzing information, communicating ideas, and advancement. Plus, you'll also have the opportunity to work with the most popular developments and trends in technology. Who doesn't want to gain momentum for innovating and discovering something marvelous?!
When working in a STEM industry, not only do you get to work in thrilling fields like computer science and engineering, but the job itself is often highly edifying with positive outcomes!
3. Boosts financial stability
If you're are looking to improve their financial wellness, a career or side-hustle in STEM is the answer! By becoming something like a software engineer or an app developer, you can earn an average of $77,415.oo a year.
Most careers that require the use of technical skills such as mathematics, technology, and science will give you a salary to match your knowledge and skills. This is perfect for bright, gifted women who have the desire to earn more money!
4. More work-from-home opportunities
Unfortunately, not every STEM career provides work-from-home opportunities however, the majority of them do. Working from home is a luxury for women with busy lives and challenges that hinder them from working for an actual business. Numerous jobs in the technology industry such as software development and game development, work primarily from a computer, enabling others to pick up their work wherever they are. There are ample benefits to working from a computer/laptop, including:
-The chance of travelling while working
-Having control over your work environment
-More time to spend with family and friends
-Spending less money on transportation
-Less commute time
So if you're looking for a tech-focused career or side-hustle, you may have the chance of reaping these benefits that come from home-based work!
5. More career options
The good new is, there isn't a shortage of STEM careers! From IT management to quantitative analysis, the amount of variation in these rolls are large, which enables women to choose careers that cater to their strengths, needs, interests, education levels, and lifestyles. For instance, if a woman decides to become a web developer, there are tons of online courses, coding bootcamps, college and university programs for her to investigate. Udemy is a phenomenal online platform to study STEM related topics like coding and earn a certificate! Udemy allows students to study at their own pace, and earn a certificate for their hard work once they're done the course!
Not only does pursuing a career in technology foster cognitive development, but also tons of part-time, full-time, and freelance job opportunities!
6. Application of transferable skills
Many STEM skills are transferable, enabling you to switch careers even after years in a particular field. For instance, mathematical skills help you in multiple areas, including data analysis, science, and even music! Some of the other transferable skills include:
-Creativity
-Teamwork
-Critical Thinking
-Leadership
So, as a female STEM student, not only will your skills transfer well into your everyday life, but you'll also have a lengthy resume!
7. To inspire females
Many females who would naturally be fascinated with sciences, maths, engineering, and/or technology might be disheartened by the absence of women in these industries. It's essential, then, to know be a role model for young girls who have the desire to explore careers in mathematics, sciences, technology, and engineering, as well as explaining to them that they can pursue whatever gives them satisfaction, regardless of their gender. You never know, by becoming a chemist or animal biologist, you might motivate one female elementary school student to enjoy learning and studying, pursue post-secondary education, discover and build something that society truly needs!
What's also amazing about STEM is, there are endless employment and side-hustle opportunities out there for intellectual, determined, geeky, and committed women who want a challenging and rewarding career. For instance, if you have a passion for mathematics, science, technology, or engineering, consider applying for a STEM degree/diploma, and/or pick a STEM-based side-hustle like web development, woodworking, etc.
8. Better problem solving skills
STEM involves thinking critically, logically, and analytically. STEM also requires continuous and creative problem solving. Since that is the case, STEM tasks can teach females how to think like scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and technology professionals.
As a result, they have a higher chance of improving their problem solving abilities. Females can build their skills of gathering information to understand the cause of the problem, as well as approaching problems from various points of view. They are also more likely to persevere with their challenges and convey ideas and concepts more constructively.
