7 Ways to Help Your Child Develop Interest in STEM.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects are important for our children to explore--not only to make their future brighter, but also to improve the world we live in. Why is STEM education so crucial? For one thing, it's a foundation for many careers. It's also important because it's often seen as "hard." If you're struggling with how to get your child interested in STEM subjects, here are 7 ways that will help them develop interest in science and math at an early age.

Start with a STEM toy

Kids are naturally curious and love to explore. Encourage that curiosity by giving them STEM toys!

STEM toys are specially designed with scientific principles in mind to spark children's interest in STEM subjects. They're an excellent way to pique kids' curiosity, as they're often hands-on and give them the opportunity to explore science concepts on their own terms.

One of the most popular STEM toys for little ones is LEGO® bricks. These blocks provide hours of entertainment for kids, but also teach them about engineering and design concepts like gravity, balance, and force, among others. A handful of other great options for STEM toys include:

(1) The LittleBits™ Jr. Starter Kit--This kit lets kids build their own circuits with colorful electronic pieces that snap together with ease. It teaches kids about electronics without having to worry about making mistakes because they can't do any harm;

(2) Coding Games--Encourage your child's interest in coding by playing coding games together! There are many free coding games available online where you can play with your child against other players or alone;

(3) A Microscope--A microscope is a great tool for showing kids how small things really are!

Ask questions about STEM

.

It might seem like your child is not interested in STEM subjects, but you could be asking the wrong questions.

Ask your child what they know about the latest invention or breakthrough in science. Ask them how they would invent a new device. Ask them what they think it would take to make the world a better place. They might be surprised at how much energy and creativity they can think of when you ask them these types of questions!

Nurture their interests

Children's interests will often develop in their early years. That's why it's important to nurture their interests and help them learn about what they're interested in.

If your child likes animals, for example, you could buy books that show pictures of different animals or you could read stories that talk about animals. If your child loves cars, take them to a car show.

The more you can do to feed their interest, the more likely they are to be excited by STEM subjects when they get older and come across them in school.

Play games with them

The best way to get your child interested in STEM subjects is by playing games with them. Playing games with them will help your child develop a love for science and math and will help them explore different topics, such as outer space and the oceans.

You can find a variety of games on the internet that are geared towards children ages 3-7. The games are designed to be educational, but still fun so they'll want to play more.

For example, your child can play Dino Town or Park Math to learn about shapes or fractions. You can also play Dr. Panda's Animal Hospital, which teaches kids about math while caring for animals in need of veterinary care.

Let go of traditional gender roles and roles in STEM

fields

STEM is often seen as male-dominated field. And while this may be true to an extent, it's not the only way things are. That's why it's important for parents not to box their children into certain roles based on their gender.

Instead of limiting your child to STEM subjects, let them explore what they want to do with their life. Give them options and open up their world to new possibilities. Not only will this broaden your child's horizons, but it will also help them explore what they're truly interested in before deciding on a specific career path or STEM subject.

One way you can encourage your child to explore is by giving them books that depict both men and women in STEM fields. This way, they'll know there are other people out there doing the same thing as them--and they won't feel alone on their journey of discovery!

Introduce them to science and math through books, movies, and stories

Introducing your child to science and mathematics through books, movies, and stories is a great way to get them interested in STEM subjects.

For example, Star Wars may be fantastic for your children, but it's also an excellent tool for inspiring interest in STEM fields. Consider how the Star Wars franchise began: George Lucas was passionate about telling a story and wanted to create a film that would excite others with his vision of the future. His passion led him to study math and physics in college--allowing him to create the perfect story to excite people about the future.

Similarly, you might want your child to learn more about space exploration--perhaps because you're curious about what space has to offer or because you think they'd enjoy learning about it. You could start by introducing them to books like "The Jupiter Files" by James Patterson or "Rocket Boys" by Homer Hickam Jr. These novels give kids a fictional account of what it might be like if they decided to study aerospace engineering at university. The more we can introduce them early on, the more likely they'll want to stay engaged over time!

Conclusion

STEM is a topic that has been in the media a lot lately and for good reason. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math and these skills are in high demand. However, many children are not being exposed to STEM because of a lack of exposure. But if you want your child to have a head start on STEM, follow these seven ways to help your child develop interest in STEM.
