The Cost of Losing Focus: My Journey as Tony

How PUBG Mobile Derailed My Dreams and What I Learned

By TonyPublished about a year ago • 3 min read

My name is Tony, and I’m 18 years old. I used to be the pride of my school, a shining example of hard work and talent. Up until 7th grade, I was a brilliant student, always topping my class with ease, especially in math, which I loved tackling like a fun challenge. Numbers and equations came naturally to me, and my teachers often praised my quick thinking. On the football (soccer) field, I was just as impressive, kicking the ball with confidence and leading my team to victory after victory. Friends and family saw a bright future ahead college, a good career, maybe even playing soccer professionally. I believed in that future too, and I worked hard to make it happen. My days were filled with the joy of learning and the thrill of scoring goals, and I felt like I could conquer anything.

But as I grew older, things started to shift. My introverted side began to take over, and I found myself overthinking everything my grades, my friendships, even the pressure to stay at the top. I started spending more time alone, lost in my thoughts, which made it harder to focus on school or soccer. The once-clear path I saw for myself started to blur, and I struggled to find my footing. Then, a mobile game called PUBG Mobile entered my life, and everything changed even more. At first, it was just a fun way to pass the time. The action, the battles, the thrill of winning—it drew me in like a magnet. I’d play a quick match after school, telling myself it was just a break. But soon, I was playing for hours, sometimes all day, forgetting about my homework, my soccer practice, and even my sleep.

My room became a battleground of its own, with my books gathering dust and my soccer ball leaning forgotten in the corner. I told myself I’d stop soon, that I could balance it all, but the game kept pulling me back. The virtual world became my escape from the pressures of school and the expectations of my team. I’d stay up late, headphones on, immersed in battles, while the next day’s lessons went unprepared. My grades began to slip, and my once-sharp mind felt foggy. I’d sit in class, staring at the board, unable to concentrate as my thoughts drifted back to the game. In 11th grade, the shock hit hard I failed math, a subject I used to ace without effort. It was a wake-up call, a moment where I saw how far I’d fallen, but I was too deep into PUBG to climb out. My parents noticed the change, my mom gently urging me to put the phone down, my dad offering to practice soccer with me again. My teachers offered extra classes, hoping to help me catch up, but I couldn’t break free from the screen. The guilt weighed on me, yet the game’s pull was stronger.

I just finished 12th grade in computer science, but I’m not the student or soccer player I once was. My dreams of excelling in academics and sports feel like distant memories now, replaced by the regret of lost time. I remember the cheers from the crowd during soccer matches, the pride of solving a tough math problem, and the hope I felt for my future. All of that seemed to fade as I chased virtual victories. I’d watch my old teammates play, their skills sharpening while mine grew rusty. My friends moved on, excelling in their studies, while I struggled to keep up. The realization hit me hard one day when I saw an old report card with straight A’s, a stark contrast to the failing grades that followed.

From my side, I want to warn everyone: don’t let distractions like gaming steal your focus. Playing games can be enjoyable, a way to relax after a long day, but when they take over your life, they can destroy everything you’ve worked for. I let PUBG Mobile control me, and it cost me my edge in school and my love for soccer. I spent countless hours chasing virtual victories while my real goals slipped away. I’d sit there, phone in hand, ignoring the world around me my family’s support, my teachers’ efforts, and my own potential. You don’t have to make the same mistake. Set limits, prioritize your studies and passions, and keep your dreams in sight. Create a schedule, stick to it, and find healthy ways to unwind. Every hour you spend on something like a game is an hour you could use to build a better future. Join a club, play a sport, or read a book anything that builds you up instead of pulling you down. Learn from my story don’t let distractions win.
