The Best Information Freewrite Traveler in 2022

Many things make this writing community my favourite. But one of my favourite aspects of this community is the ongoing sharing of useful tools and information for writers. As a more recent writer, I now tend to seek advice rather than offer it. So you can imagine how thrilled I am to finally share a tool that has revolutionised my writing process. And yes, I firmly believe that you'll gain something from it as well: Enter Freewrite Traveler.

My favourite Freewrite Traveler features

I could gush all day about how much I adore this gadget. Instead of doing that, though, allow me to list my top 5 favourite qualities and explain why you'll like them.

Distraction Free

Distractions. How many annoyances do we encounter on our computers each day? Notifications from social media, emails, updates, shopping alerts, and weather updates. Heck, some of our phones these days even pick up on our PCs.

A tool for writing without interruptions is the Freewrite Traveler from Astrohaus. It only really exists to help you communicate your ideas. The laptop or desktop computer you currently use cannot be entirely replaced by this. Neither editing software nor internet connection is available. I don't advise using this gadget for editing. Except if you want a severe headache, of course.

Freewrite Traveler was created specifically to allow you to write anything that comes to mind. It's for authors who find it difficult to express themselves when life gets in the way. Mmhm. We're referring to the ADHD writer moms who check 100 emails, order groceries and schedule at least 10 appointments during each writing session.

E-Ink Screen

I can't begin to express how much easier it is to write on my Traveler without experiencing eye strain. Being a busy mother of three, I spend much of my writing time early in the morning and late at night, when your eyes (and brain) are at their most tired. Not because of the task itself, but because you feel uncomfortable staring at the screen for such a long time, the backlight might make you dislike writing. Not right.

I can write for long periods without stopping thanks to the Freewrite Traveler's E-ink screen. Additionally, there is no glare while I write outside, which is great for summertime. Can I write at night? No, but I never thought that was important. I'm ready to go because I have a cosy desk lamp and candles all around me for some mood lighting.

Battery Life

What does it mean that Freewrite Traveler includes a lithium-polymer battery? This means that, for those of you who are non-tech savvy like me, you can go up to four weeks without ever plugging in your device. Excellent battery life is provided. I can't tell you how annoying it is to try to leave my workplace by grabbing my laptop, just to have to go plug it back in a few hours later. I use my Freewrite to write wherever I am. Anywhere I feel like it—in the restroom, on the grass, in the car.

Portability

Even though my laptop isn't particularly large, carrying it can be uncomfortable. Freewrite Traveler is portable, lightweight, and small enough to be taken anywhere. Its dimensions are 11.3′′ x 5′′ x 0.97′′, making it slightly longer than the typical paperback when folded. It doesn't even weigh 2 pounds, and you never experience the laptop's scorching heat under your legs.

Storage and Backup

On the Freewrite Traveler, you can keep draughts for up to 1,000,000+ pages, with three primary folders to aid with organisation. I prefer to categorise each of my folders into a distinct genre because I write in a variety of genres, and then I like to make many papers within each category.

However, what if I require an additional room? Keep in mind that this is merely a writing device.

The remainder of your needs will still be met on your primary computer, and Freewrite will backup your work to the location of your choice. To back up your work when connected to WiFi, you set up a cloud account through Astrohaus when configuring your device. Additionally, you may configure your device to back up to Dropbox, Google Docs, or Evernote, or you can click a button to email your papers. Clear your Freewrite and resume writing once you are satisfied they have been saved to your computer.

Keyboard

The final favourite feature is only a matter of taste, but it's very important to me. I adore the antique cherrystone keyboards' click-clack sound and feel. The majority of contemporary laptops and wireless keyboards, regrettably, have flatter keys. They don't feel as good to type on, and after a time, my wrists from my days as a gymnast start to pain. An excellent scissor-switch keyboard with larger keys is available in Freewrite Traveler. When typing in calm public spaces, there is just enough lift and click to give you some support and satisfaction without being overly loud.

Freewrite Traveler changed my writing life

I'm about to start crying now. When I decided to pursue a profession in creative writing in 2020, I was aware that I would need to use my downtime to write in the early morning and late at night. Unfortunately, during the era of remote learning, I was both a homeschooling mother and a freelance writer. I was already spending a lot of time on my computer, so adding more to my day would be disastrous.

I was a mess despite the backlighting options, blue light spectacles, applications to reduce eye strain, and comfortable pillow desks to lay your legs up on. I wanted to toss my computer into the fire because my brain was hurting me, my eyes were killing me, and I was dying. I attempted to transition to writing with a pen and paper, but my mind was working too quickly; I felt defeated for not being able to write down every thought as it occurred.

So I took a brief hiatus from writing. I was unable to stop working or homeschooling, and I was also unable to use the computer. Any writing instrument I could use that didn't have backlighting was what I desperately sought. Something lightweight, convenient, and quiet. At that point, I, at last, discovered the Freewrite Traveler.

It contained everything I required and supported my work, which I had not even considered. The cost exceeded my budget by a wide margin. To be honest, the price alone almost convinced me to give up. But I couldn't quit considering the notion of always speaking more words. I decided to take a chance, deplete some of my money, and try it.

Drawbacks of Freewrite Traveler

Okay, I'll discuss some of the disadvantages. I suppose it's only right.

Investment. Most writers are ultimately hindered by the cost of the Freewrite Traveler. Although the retail pricing for these devices is currently $449–469 depending on where you buy it, I purchased the unit at its pre-order price of $395. I would advise purchasing a new main computer if you are debating between doing so and purchasing the Freewrite. Once you've finished writing your book, you'll need all the other goodies (email, formatting, editing, etc.).

Time lag. Some Freewrite Traveler users find it difficult to type quickly enough. Lag time, or the delay between typing and seeing the word, is an undesirable side effect of all E-ink screen technologies. However, it's quite minimal. I probably would feel differently if my Freewrite were my primary computer. But the goal is simply to write the words down. I'm already typing quickly to clear my head, so I don't even notice the delay.

Updates. Any device will find these annoying, but in the past, I've seen issues with Freewrite updates that made me lose work. NOW, I made a serious error and neglected too often backup at one time. I put too much faith in technology. I also tried to update during a storm, but the power went out and I had to make some poor decisions as a result.

You should be alright as long as you regularly create a strong WiFi connection and ensure that your device does backups. If you ever experience issues while updating, make a backup of your work by connecting the device to your computer before, if necessary, resetting the device.

Take a chance on Freewrite Traveler

Lastly, I'm not claiming that investing a lot of money in writing technology is necessary to become a good writer. You don't need fancy spiral notebooks from the bookstore to be a published author. However, this instrument was a game-changer for authors like me. I would advise taking a chance with the Freewrite Traveler if you're willing to invest in your professional future.
