What is Thalassemia?

Thalassemia is basically an inherited blood disorder that is usually caused due to extremely low levels of hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is one of the most important components of the blood as it helps in the transportation of oxygen to the entire body.

It is seen that individuals who have mild Thalassemia might not require any treatment or have any life-threatening condition. But usually, people who suffer from severe thalassemia have a life-threatening condition and might also require a regular blood transfusion in order to survive and perform daily activities.

People who suffer from Thalassemia have a lot of problems in performing daily activities as they go through a lot of fatigue and weakness.

Symptoms of Thalassemia

Symptoms of Thalassemia depend upon various factors such as the type of thalassemia, the severity of it, etc.

Some of the common symptoms of thalassemia might include:

  • Dark-colored urine
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Facial deformities
  • Pale skin
  • Dull or Yellowish skin
  • Slow growth or development
  • Delayed puberty
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Bone abnormalities
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diagnosis of Thalassemia

As thalassemia is a blood disorder therefore the doctor asks for a blood sample which is sent to the laboratory where it is tested for anemia and abnormal hemoglobin. The blood is tested under a microscope to see the shape of the red blood cells and their number.

If Red blood cells are abnormally shaped then it is a clear sign of thalassemia. Further, in order to be sure, another test called hemoglobin electrophoresis may be recommended as it helps in identifying the abnormal type of red blood cell.

Ayurvedic treatment for Thalassemia

As mentioned earlier, Thalassemia is a genetic passed blood disorder that ultimately leads to anemia and organ failure. There is a constructive understanding of Ayurvedic treatment in Thalassemia with the help of Ayurved Adibalapravruta and Sahaja Vyadhi. According to Ayurveda the pittapradhana tridosha affects the function of Raktadhatu. There are various drugs that are recommended by Ayurveda such as Devdaru, Kumari, Rohitaka, Agastya, etc. Further, Gandakadi yoga is suggested in order to improve the condition of the patient.
