Why we must teach our teenagers to break free of fear and fight for creative freedom
Why we must teach our teenagers to break free of fear and fight for creative freedom I run a lot of writing workshops in secondary schools and what I see is this: teenagers afraid to be creative. Even when I assure them they can’t get it wrong, they pause and agonise and look to their teacher, because they’ve been conditioned to mimic – it gets them good grades, after all.

what if Earth was half land and half water
imagine earth with an even 50 50 split between continents and oceans our planet covered half by land and half by water how would this change the planet as you know it what new kinds of vacations could this make possible for you and what does the color of your pee have to do with this this is what if and here's what would happen if the earth was half land and half water when it comes to making life possible on a planet water is an absolute have that's why we look for alien life on worlds where liquid water could exist when it comes to our own planet 71 of its surface is covered by water most of that is in our five oceans together they form one global ocean now if you replaced nearly a quarter of our ocean water with land how soon would earth turn into just another lifeless rock in space thanks to global warming earth's sea levels are currently rising but if you wanted to balance the planet's land to water ratio you'd see the sea levels absolutely plummet and not just a few meters but around three kilometers earth would look very different the regions around both the north and south poles would be completely dried out and every continent on the planet would expand and not just a little either all this newly emerged territory around the world would be roughly equal to the current surface areas of asia europe africa and north america combined that would be an enormous amount of unused space everything extending off the old coasts would be relatively flat but some of the areas that used to be deep ocean would reveal vast corridors and steep crevasses as you explored this new land you'd discover that the one global ocean would be no more all of the oceans would be separated from each other and all of the continents would be one connected landmass and this would be good news for evolution early humans didn't have any ships or planes we spread across the globe simply by walking venturing away from africa some seventy thousand to one hundred thousand years ago we found our way to europe and asia eventually we were able to cross a land bridge connecting asia to the americas possibly as far back as 20 000 years ago with the 50 50 split in place you'd now be able to cover even more ground finally you could take that around the world trip you've always dreamed of all on your own two feet but this shifting balance of water and land wouldn't be all fun and games with so much less water covering the surface our ocean currents would be disrupted and this would seriously destabilize the climate currents distribute the heat that's absorbed by the oceans around the globe disrupting them would mean even colder temperatures around the north and south poles while the already hot equatorial regions would get even hotter climate change would speed up too all because oceans wouldn't be able to absorb so much carbon dioxide from the air that excess carbon dioxide would blanket the planet and raise temperatures rain levels would also drop off and this would create dangerous droughts as well as new deserts in many inland areas so while there may be an abundance of new land available large stretches of earth could become uninhabitable plants animals and humans would all need to adapt to being less dependent on water or at least start using it more efficiently water scarcity could result in animals evolving to be smaller with more making the jump to a strictly carnivorous diet and sadly the abundance of life that today's oceans support would struggle to survive and maybe the most surprising consequence that you'd need to get used to is that your pee would likely change forever usually urine is made up of more than 90 water but with less water in your daily life yours would become much darker and start to smell like ammonia i mean things could be worse you could drain the oceans of every drop of water they have but that's a story for another what if [Music]

What is computer?. Content Warning.
Computers are all around us from laptop computers to smartphones to smart watches. They're changing the way that we live our lives but have you ever asked yourself what exactly is a computer? A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data. The computer sees data as ones and zeros but it knows how to combine them into much more complex things such as a photo, movie, website, game, and much more. Computers use a combination of hardware and software. Hardware is any physical part of the computer which includes the internal components and the external parts like the monitor and keyboard. Software is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do such as a web browser media player or word processor. When most people say computer, they're talking about a personal computer. This can be a desktop computer or a laptop which has basically the same capabilities but in a more portable package. Personal computers come in a few different styles. The most common type uses the windows operating system. Mac or Macintosh computers feature the mac OS operating system while chromebooks run on chrome OS. Smartphones and other mobile devices mostly use the iOS or Android operating systems; Computers come in many other shapes and sizes. TVs, game consoles, and even appliances like refrigerators can have built-in computers, although they may not do everything a desktop or laptop can. There's another type of computer that plays an important role in our lives: Servers. A server sends information to other computers on a network. In fact, every time you use the internet, web servers deliver the web pages that you want to see to your computer. Servers are also used in many offices to store and share files. As you can see, there are many types of computers out there, and each one plays a part in our modern world. There are many different types of computers, but they all use similar parts to operate. Starting with a standard desktop model, the computer case holds the main components of the computer. This is where the actual processing happens today. Most cases are what we call tower cases which means they stand up vertically but they can also come in other shapes and sizes. To view things on your computer, you'll need a monitor. The monitor uses the video processor inside your computer case to display images, text, and other content. Most monitors have an LCD and LED display, both of which are very thin so they don't take up much space. To interact with your computer, you'll need a keyboard and a mouse. Keyboards come in many different styles, including wireless and ergonomic. The mouse is used to control the mouse pointer on the screen so you can click and interact with your computer. Most mice detect movement using an optical sensor on the bottom. Underneath, you'll find a small electronic guy. Laptops combine all of these things into one that includes the components that are normally inside the computer case plus a built-in screen. Keyboard and touchpad. The touchpad is a small touch sensitive area that takes the place of a traditional mouse. It lets you control the mouse pointer using a drawing motion with your finger. Laptops offer the best of both worlds when it comes to portability. You can use them on the go thanks to the built-in battery. Or you can connect a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse, effectively turning your laptop into a desktop. So those are the basic parts of any computer setup. Every computer has a large circuit board called a motherboard. This contains some of the most important parts of the computer, such as the cpu, also known as the central processing unit or processor. CPU can be considered the brain of the computer because it processes information and carries out commands. Since it tends to get hot, it's covered by a piece of metal called a heat sink, which draws heat away from the processor. The motherboard also contains the computer's ram or random access memory. This is the short-term memory that the computer uses whenever it's performing calculations.
