Learn how to start your own YouTube channel
this video is brought to you by Squarespace if you need a website or domain go to squarespace.com hey everyone and welcome to a new video this one's going to be a bit different I'm going to go over my YouTube journey to 440,000 subscribers in less than two years and show you what I did what rules I broke and show you how you can do it too if you stay till my bonus tip I'll show you what I did that everyone I mean everyone told me never to do my name is Simon Damon and I'm a professional nature and wildlife photographer living in Eastern Canada I make weekly videos giving you photo tips or taking you behind the scenes for nature photography subscribe if you want to see [Music] more well here we are this is my 100th video and we're at my 2-year anniversary of starting a YouTube channel it's been an amazing journey and I absolutely have you to thank for it it's viewers that make this happen so this will be in a truth or false format of the advice or rules of the pros because I looked at the advice that others were giving and took some of it but not others the quick version of my channel growth is that I started in the spring of 2022 I'd recently retired from a desk job career and doing more professional photography work mostly for fun and started exploring video I didn't want to just lay around in retirement and take it easy so I started posting to YouTube with a modest goal of 36,500 subscribers in year one 100 per day by making a video a week my first video was on how to photograph a bird's breath I got 10,000 views in the first week and was relatively happy about seven or eight months in of posting weekly videos is when it really started to heat up and concurrently I launched a video that really took off financially I was making at that point easily enough for someone to live off of at around 100,000 subscribers but everyone will be different depend depending on the country's ages and demographics of their viewers the better off financially your viewers are the better off your ad revenue is as YouTube can charge more for ads on your channel I hit 140,000 subscribers in year one and since then been getting a steady 25,000 subscribers monthly so I'll hit 450,000 by my twoyear anniversary in a couple of weeks so let's get into the advice I was given see if it was accurate and what I think you should do tip number one your First videos will suck and no one will ever see them false with a hint of Truth the first part of this is likely true your first videos will suck not in your own mind the day you made them but when you've made a 100 videos and look back they will indeed be riddled with amateur mistakes and errors but that really doesn't matter no one will ever judge you for your most amateurish looking video this means you need to start making videos now and get that sucking part in your past you just need to get through it now the part around no one will ever see them is possible but false the average view count on my first 10 videos is 200,000 views but it will depend if your content is onetime or stuff like what you had for breakfast or content with a longer shelf life like how to make a chees the omelet for breakfast 5 years from now there will still be people interested in learning how to make an omelet but no one will care what you had for breakfast breakfast 5 years ago this means you should pick your topics and channel Focus carefully will you be slow and steady like an educational channel on a topic that will be evergreen or will you just jump into the hot Trends and ride shorter but maybe more intensive waves of interest for my part lately I've been getting about 1 and a half million views per month even if my latest month's content only added up to 500,000 views my backlog of older material keeps delivering for me includ including in ad Revenue so content that has a good shelf life and will still be relevant in 5 years may not make as much money today but may pay off long term look at some of my videos that didn't do so well at the beginning then all of a sudden took off slow and steady may win the race in the end don't only judge your success on the video views in the first week consider the long game too tip number two in today's market you need to make shorts false I decided ear early on that I enjoyed making long form video content because it was a good medium to teach people well and teach them something worth learning and that's what I enjoyed doing I wanted some level of satisfaction that I would be improving people's photography so I've not gotten into shorts until last month when I made a couple for fun I'm just not sure where they fit into my teaching style can I use shorts to direct people to my longform content can I attract shorts Watchers to my channel to learn in deeper dive long form vide videos also I guess I just don't enjoy making shorts that have a way of coming across as gimmicky I'll keep playing around with it maybe but I suggest make the type of content you enjoy making now are shorts a pathway to faster subscriber growth yes as YouTube is indeed pushing them hard but needed no my growth was all in long form content the trick with short subscribers they're not the same as long form subscribers the level of Engagement isn't the same and Financial for the Creator they're not even close I recently saw someone say they got $300 for 10 million shorts views on a video that's 3 cents per thousand views many long form content creators get5 10 or $15 per thousand views so before heading into shorts consider why you're doing it if you're not leveraging that into leads for something that pays like product sales long form content educational products or selling a service you're probably giving YouTube cheap content to compete with Tik Tok and they don't need to pay you the exception is if you can drive Mega numbers I mean super huge I'll mention an example in concert with the next tip tip number three gear doesn't matter true now while in some genres like if you have a channel on shooting video your own channel content is your proof of expertise and your video product needs to look good but in many cases starting with a phone can work in fact it can work so well that I recently met another Creator at a YouTube Creator event who is making 5 to 10 second short content on his phone only and killing it I mean killing it billions that's right billions of views monthly so even if you only get fractions of a scent per view those types of numbers add up the standard advice in this area is the following and it's accurate people will put up with crappy video with good audio longer than crappy audio with good video so get an external microphone for your camera don't worry about 4K recording in the beginning and just shoot and keep people interested some lighting for indoors is a great idea too and will make your video look much better and maybe use a teleprompter so you don't ramble if your content is speaking to the camera tip number four don't wait just make videos you need to learn what will work by doing just go this is true while many businesses need market research to figure out what is likely to work in a certain Marketplace YouTube is really a learning envir environment at its best you have direct access to lots of customers and amazing analytics that will instantly tell you what is working and what is not there are only three things that really matter in the end about YouTube success and it's not figuring out the algorithm YouTube pulls content for its viewers not pushes for creators it says I think this viewer might like this and shows them stuff then what they like they show them more of period the three things that matter are one did the viewer click on your video and start watching it two did they watch it a long time which means they liked it and stayed on the platform longer and three will they watch more of your content if presented to them at the end I.E binge watch your channel after having discovered you or at least keep watching YouTube content and staying on the platform longer and really the first two are the most important clicking on the video and watching it for a long time all the other metric are noise make videos people like and give them a reason to click on it in the first place and everything will fall into place if they're good I'd like to thank the sponsor of this video Squarespace if you're going to have a YouTube channel you probably have an expertise or product or service you're talking about or you may want a place to show off merchandise or monetize your YouTube presence a website is just a great way to have a professional place online where you can show off your work your service or your personal brand social media are often showing you or your work in short clips or photos and small thumbnails and sometimes make it difficult to monetize as they may not want links to external sites a website is your permanent home for you and your work and brand presented in galleries or on pages designed by you that show them off at their best I built my own website using Squarespace and it was easy and getting smarter now with a new guided design feature called Squarespace blueprint choose a profession Al curated layout that's built for you from the ground up it's also a great way to monetize your work by setting up an online store so you can take payments by credit card or even PayPal and Apple pay from all over the world and with a new feature buy now and pay later with afterpay and clear pay so go to squarespace.com to sign up for a free trial and when you're ready to launch go to squarespace.com signment for 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain advice number five YouTube favors the already famous so they can convert their Facebook and Instagram success to YouTube there's no way to start from scratch mostly false the reason this is false is that social media channels won't let you convert your following to YouTube why consider that Facebook and Instagram are competitors to YouTube any post on those platforms that say hey check me out on YouTube and here's a link is a post that to those platforms is the worst button ever it says hey if people click on that link they will leave my platform and go over to a competitor so what do those platforms do with your post show it to nobody so I wasn't able to get much growth from my other platforms one benefit that existing creators do get is that once in a while people would bump into their YouTube channel and say hey I know that guy or gal from Instagram but the Creator didn't send them there they most likely found them independently so for most people YouTube growth needs to be organic within the YouTube platform people who are successful on three different social media platforms probably haven't leveraged much one platform for success to another but rather have an offering that is ubiquitously successful because it's that good another thing you hear is that YouTube discriminates against smaller newer channels no you do need to earn your credibility with YouTube but if someone like Mr Beast with a few hundred million subscribers were to start a new channel anonymously he would find success because his product is that good and the reaction of viewers even on a small scale would be so positive that it wouldn't take YouTube long to say this guy makes killer content let's recommend this to new viewers tip number six come up with a plan and if at first you don't succeed keep trying false I started my Channel with what I thought was a solid vision and I was wrong people on Facebook and Instagram would always say to my photos ah I wish I could follow you around for a day so I thought that I would make videos taking people behind the scenes of my photo adventures and that's what my first video was I showed people how I got this footage and photos of a bird singing and showing off its breath and how to get their own shot it did okay for my first video but I also threw in a few educational videos about photography early on how to take sharp bird photos or shoot the Milky Way over a few months I was seeing a clear Trend my educational videos were doing much better than behind the scenes to the point that as of right now if you look at my first videos ever three are behind the scenes videos and have an average of 20,000 views and three are photo education and have an average of 400,000 views so YouTube is telling me something my educational videos are what people want and that's a tip for you people like Casey neistat popularize behind the scenes with millions of followers but it's a dying Trend and not a great strategy starting out why because people only want to follow people around who they already know and about whom they're very curious but if me or you or the average person makes a video about where we went for dinner no one cares and in 3 years people will care even less so think about your channel topic and approach strategically but don't get married to it be prepared to change gears if the audience isn't responding either topic Niche content editing mix or Target Market tip number seven YouTube is saturated in 2024 easily false now it's may be true that there is more competition than 10 years ago and some large channels of today have done well because they were an early entrant with less competition but clearly if I made it in a really crowded photography genre it's false photography channels are a dime a dozen and I've still done well by most standards this is odd in a way as several prominent photography YouTubers have quit in the last few years in part because they're channels who used to do amazingly well are really slowing down but at the same time mine is growing really quickly this I think is because things change and people aren't adapting some of these photography channels originally grew by copying the very successful style of someone like Peter McKinnon who has a great Channel they rode the wave of his style for a little while but in the end they're not Peter and neither am I and that style is only going to work for a select few who do it the very best but in the end I'm new entrant and doing well so it's clearly possible but that also means that my model for My Success may not be lasting either I need to be prepared to adapt to changes if People's tastes and likes change and I guarantee you that if my views start going down I'm not going to keep coming up with the same content I'll be looking to adapt tip number eight that I heard is that thumbnails and titles are important ridiculously true the reality almost a sad one at first when you you see it is that people need to click on your video no click and you could have the best video in the world no one will ever see it but you need a good description and thumbnail to make them click spend lots of time studying thumbnails and titles it's crazy important this is called The Click through rate the percentage of people who clicked on your video when it was shown to them once you've learned to make good videos consistently this click-through rate called the CTR is maybe the most important metric there is but it's not that simple if people click on your thumbnail because it's really good or click baity but they don't keep watching and drop off after a few seconds of watching your video YouTube will know in no time and your video performance is toast don't promise a video you don't deliver on here's a sample of my like to dislike ratio I'm averaging 99.6 or so you need to deliver what you said you would in your thumbnail and description so you need both a great reason for people to click on the video and people need to stay watching because it's a good product and engaging one without the other is no good and YouTube will figure you out in a second and not bother recommending your videos so how do you keep them watching for a long time which is called the retention rate in the YouTube analytic speak YouTube will show you this graph for all your videos showing you how long they watch you need to do three things one by keeping them interested the whole time two giving them a sense that the best part is at the end and three once you deliver the best part the conclusion the climax stop the video right there if you start to ramble after the best part and hint that the video is coming to an end people leave you right then impacting your retention rate so when your video hits the best part end it right there like here I am at the top of Mount Everest I made it and now my bonus step the rule I broke I mean I super broke it because everyone said don't do it and I really do it they say don't include an intro to your video this is super false unless so every YouTube expert said don't have an intro don't introduce yourself don't waste any time telling people who you are get right into the content now this may be true for some but if you have an expertise to show in your intro that gives you instant credibility in your genre of video It's Worth showing off so I indeed have an intro even with a bit of theme music I show off some scenes and some footage of myself I can take decent pictures so I say who I am I show them some photos showing that I know what I'm talking about I do this because it's a competency test that I can easily pass for the viewer and gain instant credibility but if you have nothing to show don't have an intro if you do phone reviews and your skill set or experience is exactly the same as everyone else doing it don't waste the time but if you have a special skill that shows your competent in the subject matter show it off if you're a doctor talking medical stuff say you're a doctor but then get into the content without delay the longer you take to get going with your Rich content the more viewers you'll lose so can you indeed start a YouTube channel and be successful even today absolutely and don't forget that YouTube is a path to many things and opportunities to monetize I have tours to Africa and my last tour I made public was over subscribed with a waiting list in 6 hours and my wildlife photography course is doing so well we awarded a $113,000 lens to a course participant don't let anyone tell you you can't do it some people when they can't do it themselves will lay blame on the system or the algorithm and say it can't be done get out there bring your best to the table have a new or interesting approach deliver your expertise in a novel way and don't be afraid to experiment practice your public voice but be authentic Perfection is the enemy of good enough so don't wait to get it perfect start without delay to begin honing your skills but be open to perfecting your delivery in subject matter over time remember when you succeed it's not luck it's laboring under correct knowledge I know you can do it
