Education in the Time of Corona
Dear Children BY:Khan In light of the second wave of the coronavirus in Pakistan, the government made an important decision: from November 26 until January 11, all educational institutions across the country would remain closed. This order would take effect immediately and continue to be enforced until January 31, 2021. Several district-level education heads supported this decision. Their argument was simple yet serious: coronavirus cases were rising rapidly, and the lives of both students and teachers were at risk. According to them, the most responsible step was to announce vacations for the time being and extend the academic year later. But, dear children, let me share something with you. In countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, and dozens of others, schools and universities were also shut down due to the threat of the coronavirus. Yet, learning did not come to a halt. Instead, those countries found a way to keep the wheel of education turning. Not only did their students continue to receive regular lessons, but examinations were also conducted— all through online education. The World Health Organization (WHO) had already declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. In response, trillions of dollars were allocated worldwide to fight the virus. Restrictions were placed on major events, seminars, and public gatherings almost everywhere. In this situation, the greatest potential loss was not only economic but also educational. Recognizing this, many countries adopted online learning systems in time and prevented the collapse of education. Now, when we turn back to Pakistan, it may appear on the surface that the situation was somewhat under control. However, as new cases kept being reported every day, it was clear that the government needed to remain vigilant and fully prepared. No matter how severe the emergency might become, the process of learning must not stop. For that, our education department needed to adopt modern methods and technologies. The syllabus being taught in classrooms had to be moved online. And let me assure you— this is not an impossible task. In fact, even before the pandemic, the Punjab IT Board had already introduced a mobile application and a web portal under the name “eLearn”. This platform had been available on the internet for about three years. It contained digital versions of textbooks from Grade 1 to Grade 12. These were not ordinary scanned books. They were designed in a highly interactive way, making it possible for students to study and understand their lessons without the help of a tutor. Concepts were explained through videos, animations, and audio examples so that learners could grasp them easily. Therefore, children who study under the Punjab Textbook Board syllabus had no reason to sit idle during these holidays. Instead of wasting time listening to endless coronavirus news or gossiping about the pandemic, they were encouraged to maintain a healthy routine and make use of the resources already available. If a household had more than one child, the older siblings could help teach the younger ones. Likewise, neighbors could come together by creating WhatsApp study groups. Through these groups, students could schedule their daily lessons, share notes, and even explain difficult concepts via video calls. By doing so, not only would the syllabus continue to be covered, but children would also become more skilled in using modern technology. Most importantly, they would not fall into the trap of idleness. In our society, the word “holiday” is often misunderstood. For many people, it immediately translates into outings, parties, sleeping for long hours, or visiting relatives. This mindset, however, is not productive. Even on regular weekends, countless people waste their time lying around, believing they are enjoying a “relaxing weekend.” But let me give you a different perspective. If you ask a laborer about his holiday, he would tell you that his body actually aches more on his day off. Why? Because on working days, his body remains active and strong, but when he doesn’t work, the inactivity brings pain. This teaches us something important: rest is good, but only when used wisely. Unused time can become a burden. The same applies to students and office workers. A holiday should not be seen as an escape from life but as an opportunity to do something positive and meaningful. When I asked several parents what their children would do during the long closure of schools, many of them appeared worried. They confessed that they had no idea how their kids would spend so much time at home. “The older ones will somehow study on their own,” they said, “but what about the younger ones? How do we manage them?” The answer is simple, dear children. The younger ones should continue reading their books regularly. They can also watch educational cartoons or creative videos, but they must avoid spending excessive time glued to the television or mobile screens. Entertainment is fine, but it must be balanced with learning. Remember, knowledge is the light that guides us even in the darkest times. If you let these holidays pass in laziness, it will be very hard to catch up later. But if you choose to use your time wisely, you will not only stay ahead in your studies but also develop habits that will benefit you throughout life. Most importantly, do not forget the power of prayer. Alongside your studies and routines, turn to Allah with sincerity. Pray that this dangerous pandemic comes to an end, that people remain safe, and that life returns to normal. Nothing is more powerful than asking for Allah’s protection and mercy. So, dear children, let us make a promise: We will not waste our holidays. We will continue our studies through online platforms, books, and discussions. We will help our siblings and friends learn. We will use technology positively. And above all, we will pray for the safety of our families, our country, and the world. May Allah protect us all from this disease. Ameen.

Bioreactors for Space: Living Factories of the Future
As humanity moves closer to the age of long-term space exploration and colonization, one practical challenge grows louder: how can we sustain life far from Earth? Rockets can’t simply carry endless supplies of food, oxygen, and clean water for astronauts heading to Mars or building habitats on the Moon. The solution may lie in an elegant fusion of biology and engineering — bioreactors, compact “living factories” designed to keep astronauts alive and thriving beyond our planet.

Dark Exoplanets That Swallow Light
When we gaze at the night sky, we imagine planets as bright, reflective worlds glowing with the light of their parent stars. After all, that’s how we see Venus and Jupiter in our own solar system—by the sunlight bouncing off their clouds and surfaces. But astronomers have discovered a bizarre class of planets that defy this simple logic. These worlds are so dark that they reflect less light than coal or asphalt. They are known as dark exoplanets, and they are some of the strangest objects ever observed beyond our solar system.

The Light of Knowledge
The Light of Knowledge BY: Ubaid Wajiha Nadeem, Karachi “Fool! You are such a fool. All you know is studying, nothing else. You’re like a bookworm who spends her whole life with her nose buried in books. Hahaha!” Ariba’s mocking laughter echoed in the classroom as she ridiculed her classmate, Sarya. Sarya, unlike most of her peers, was one of the most serious and dedicated students in her class. She was always determined to come first in exams and never wasted time on idle talk or careless activities. If others played or joked around, she quietly turned the pages of her books, diving deeper into the world of knowledge. It was chemistry period that day. Sir Ishtiaq, a middle-aged teacher with a deep, commanding voice, was enthusiastically delivering his lecture on the structure of the atom. His chalk moved swiftly across the blackboard as he explained protons, neutrons, and electrons with great passion. Yet, despite his energy, most students in the class were lost in their own worlds. Maria and Amina, seated at the back, were giggling while drawing beards and mustaches on the portraits of scientists in their textbooks. They had turned serious figures like Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr into clowns with scribbles of thick glasses and crooked teeth. Nearby, Halima and Saleema were whispering to each other, not about atoms or chemistry, but about history. They were halfheartedly reciting the “Fourteen Points of Quaid-e-Azam” as though it was some kind of tongue twister to pass time. Alina, who was supposed to be taking notes, was daydreaming about food. She had skipped breakfast that morning, and her mind was busy imagining crispy samosas, steaming plates of biryani, and sweet gulab jamuns rather than the invisible world of particles that Sir Ishtiaq was describing. Meanwhile, the rest of the class was busy whispering, gossiping, or playing small pranks on one another. The atmosphere was noisy and chaotic—completely unfit for learning. Only Sarya sat quietly, her notebook open, her pen moving quickly to capture every important point her teacher explained. But the constant noise around her made it difficult to focus. Finally, the bell rang, signaling the end of the period. But the next class was no different. The same distractions, the same chaos, and the same lack of interest filled the room. For Sarya, it was unbearable. When the school day ended, she returned home feeling utterly exhausted and disheartened. Dropping her bag carelessly, she sank into the sofa with a heavy sigh. “What’s the matter, Sarya? You look upset. Come, eat something first,” her mother said gently, placing a plate of food in front of her. But instead of eating, Sarya burst out in frustration. “Ammi, I’m not going to school from tomorrow! What’s the point of going? There’s nothing but noise and games there. Nobody listens to the teacher. Nobody wants to study. I can’t learn anything in that environment. I’ve decided I won’t go anymore.” Tears welled up in her eyes as she rushed to her room, slamming the door behind her. Her mother stood silently for a moment, realizing how deeply hurt her daughter was. Later that evening, when Sarya was sitting on the sofa with her head in her hands—too upset even to attend her tuition—her mother came and sat beside her. With patience and wisdom, she spoke softly: “My dear child, you must never let the carelessness of others become the reason for your own downfall. If others are wasting their time and sinking in the darkness of ignorance, does that mean you too should abandon the light of knowledge? Think, Sarya—shouldn’t you be the one who inspires others toward learning instead of turning away yourself?” Her mother’s words struck Sarya deeply. She realized she had been on the verge of making a big mistake. Why should she give up just because others were irresponsible? If knowledge was precious, then it was her duty not only to preserve it for herself but to spread its light among those around her. That very night, Sarya made a decision. She promised herself that she would never step back from the path of learning. More than that, she vowed to awaken the spirit of education in her classmates as well. The next morning, she arrived at school with a new determination. Instead of isolating herself, she began to speak to her classmates during breaks. At first, many laughed when she encouraged them to take their studies seriously. But Sarya was patient and persistent. She explained lessons in simpler words, helped friends with homework, and even created small study groups. Her enthusiasm was infectious. Slowly but surely, her classmates began to change. Maria and Amina found more joy in solving equations with Sarya than in scribbling on textbooks. Halima and Saleema discovered that history was much more interesting when connected to real events. Alina realized that focusing in class left her with more free time at home to enjoy her favorite snacks. Within weeks, the atmosphere of the classroom transformed. Instead of chaos, there was focus. Instead of laughter over mischief, there was excitement about learning. Even Sir Ishtiaq noticed the change. He praised the class, saying, “Now this is the spirit of true students! If you continue like this, nothing can stop you from shining bright.” Sarya’s campaign, which she called the “Spread Knowledge Movement,” became well-known in the school. Students from other classes admired her dedication and began to join in. When the annual examinations arrived, the results told the true story. Sarya’s class, once the most careless and noisy, had performed remarkably well. Their collective performance was like a shining star, proving that with the right guidance and determination, even the most distracted students could excel. Sarya stood proudly with her classmates on result day, her heart filled with joy. She realized that knowledge was not just about individual success—it was about lifting others with you, about spreading light where there was once darkness. Her mother’s words echoed in her heart: “If others are drowning in ignorance, you must be the one to call them toward the light.” From that day onward, Sarya never looked at education as a lonely journey. For her, it became a mission—a mission to inspire, uplift, and guide others toward the path of knowledge. And thus, the girl who once thought of giving up became the reason an entire class shone with brilliance.
