Why Every Student Should Get Tuition Reimbursement

College students are part of the long list of groups that have suffered because of COVID-19 (coronavirus). For many of us, with just an email, we were asked to leave our belongings, our friends, and our classes and abandon our school. Most students were kicked out of their universities in the middle of the semester and only received half of the resources that they paid for. However, universities are still charging full tuition. Here's why all students deserve to have a tuition reimbursement for their spring semesters.

1. Education Quality

It is no secret that the quality of classes taken by students due to the coronavirus isn't the same quality of education they were taking at their university classrooms. Now, students are taking courses via Zoom or are doing online assignments without a professor. For those students who have taking dance classes, labs, and art classes, among others, the value of these experiences depended on the in-person factor. Now these students are left doing virtual labs and dancing in their rooms in front of cameras. With such a drastic decrease of quality, should come a decrease in tuition.

2. University Resources

Fitness centers. Libraries. Writing centers. Campus-wide events. Counseling services. Meal plans. Student center. These are a number of resources that students are charged for in their tuition as a 'resource fee' and will not be used until next fall. Students no longer have access to these facilities, events, or meals that took part of the student life at their schools. Together, these fees add up to hundreds of dollars for each student, and should be reimbursed along with tuition money.

3. It's Possible

Universities have millions of dollars in their endowment funds and budgets, and have millions more coming from their alumni relations, and students who are still paying for this semester's tuition. Yet, on the other hand, students are drowning in debt in order to pay for classes and resources they're not receiving. The truth is, that universities have enough money to give their students their tuition back. As educational institutions, they consistently claim that they are looking out for our best interests and wellbeing. However, their greed might prove otherwise.

It almost seems as if the average college student in the U.S. has been left behind and forgotten whenever anyone considers to assist those affected by the virus. These are difficult and unprecedented times. Students have lost months of what's supposed to be the best years of their lives. They've gotten laid off from their on-campus jobs, fired from their current internships, only to hear their future internships have gotten cancelled. Students who are graduating now, are entering an unstable workforce where nothing is known. We are not trying to be selfish, or possessive, but we, as a demographic, should not be the ones paying for something we are not receiving.

If you or anyone would know would like to fight for your universities fair tuition I encourage you to take action! Start a petition, form a group, or call your university. Let your voice be heard.
