Studying probably isn’t your favorite thing in the world, which is something common for the vast majority of people, but that doesn’t mean that it also has to be difficult, stressful, and challenging. When you approach the process of studying in the right and a smart manner, you can deal with and learn new information a lot more efficiently. With different habits and practices, you too can master the art of studying!

1. Study at a designated space

You might not be aware of this, but your personal environment has a huge impact on you mentally. Basically, your surroundings can affect your mood, concentration and levels of stress. That said, it’s crucial that you pinpoint the place and ambiance that suits your studying style and lets you focus the best. If this is your room and desk, make sure to keep this area neat, clean, and distraction-free; of course, you can add a couple of motivational and decorative bits and bobs. But if you feel you can never concentrate in your room, check out other spots such as libraries, cafes, and maybe even study groups. Once you find the place that effectively boosts your studying ability, stick to it.

2. Minimize the distractions

These days, the biggest distractions include your phone and computer. When you’re trying to study, it’s crucial that you disconnect yourself properly and minimize the distractions that way. So, make sure to log out from all of your social media accounts. Close the tabs in your browser and, if possible, turn off your phone (or at least put it on silent). Even when you’re taking a break from studying, stay away from technology and social media! We all know very well that “just a couple of minutes on YouTube” can turn into an hour or two! Instead, you can take a short walk, do a couple of squats or jumping jacks, observe the scenery from the window or simply relax/meditate.

3. Improve your organization

More often than not, people can find themselves in a tricky and stressful situation, especially when studying is concerned, simply due to their lack of proper organization. However, it’s not that difficult to keep track of your lessons and things you have to complete or go over. Some people enjoy writing by hand, and you can make your to-do lists for specific days and even a week in advance. On the other hand, you can utilize some of the task organization apps readily available on both iOS and Android. This visual representation of your tasks will allow you to pre-plan and actually organize for the day ahead.

4. Utilize notes as much as possible

Of course, textbooks are important, but having actual notes can make a huge difference for your proper understanding of the material. If possible, try to take handwritten notes of your lectures. However, this task isn’t always that easy and simple. But that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to useful notes. Actually, you can use an online source for comprehensive study notes from a large number of different universities and lectures in order to boost the efficiency of your study sessions.

5. Study in chunks

If your goal is to really learn and make the most out of your studying process without overwhelming yourself and getting burnt out, it’s important to split your work into more manageable chunks. Use the notes and materials you have to organize, and separate the different parts you have to learn so that you can focus on one particular subject at a time. Don’t forget to take short breaks; for example, studying for 25 minutes and then taking a five minute break will be a lot more effective and less stressful than trying to study for two hours straight with no break.

Keep in mind that studying is not a chore, nor is it some impossible task that only superhumans can handle. This is just the conscious effort of using your brainpower to improve your knowledge and do something positive for your future.
