What Is the NRI Quota?

NRI quota is a reserved quota of seats for NRI/OCI/PIO students in medical colleges in India. These seats are generally found in:

  • Private Medical Colleges
  • Deemed Universities
  • Certain Government Colleges (as per the policy of the state)
  • The number of seats under the NRI quota could be anywhere from 5% to 15% in most colleges.

Admission Procedure for NRI Students

Here's a step-by-step procedure NRI students should take:

1. NEET Registration

Start by registering on the official NEET UG website by filling out your details and uploading documents. Make sure to select “NRI” as your category.

2. Appear for NEET Exam

After registration, appear for the NEET exam in India (as it is usually conducted within the country). Make sure to prepare well using quality study material and mock tests.

3. Qualify NEET

After the result is declared, make sure you cross the cutoff of NRI candidates. Only such candidates can proceed to the counselling phase.

4. MCC & State Counselling

Undergo counselling by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota and Deemed Universities. Few states also carry out their own counselling for private colleges.

5. Apply for NRI Quota Seats

During counselling, choose colleges offering NRI quota seats. You’ll be required to upload additional documents like:

  • NRI status certificate
  • Sponsorship affidavit (from the NRI relative)
  • Passport and visa copies
  • Relationship proof with the NRI sponsor

6. Pay NRI Fee and Secure Admission

Once a seat is allotted, pay the tuition fee under the NRI quota (which is usually higher than regular fees) and confirm your admission.

  • Documents Required for NRI Quota Admission
  • NEET scorecard
  • 10th and 12th mark sheets
  • Candidate's passport
