The essays and artistic works are indeed co-created by the readers or viewers and the way they perceive them as a filter in the view of their experience. Reading the assigned texts, I tried to focus on the feelings that have been caused by the pieces of the literary work. In my routine life, I usually catch the ideas and implications of the readings a few days or a month later when I have an opportunity to judge the things in retrospective and to measure a certain progress or admit the change that has occurred over this time. Within this reflection, I will discuss the assigned readings and their influence on me. In addition, I will some recommendations for making this class better.

First, I would like to stress that there is no stories I dislike. Some of the plots are disappointing for me whereas others are quite surprising. The others remind me the life thus being extremely realistic. Mr. Blake and his insane secretary from “The five-forty-eight” were the most intriguing characters for me from the very beginning though I was disappointed by the story’s mere end. It developed quite fast and resulted basically in nothing. At the same time, I consider that the stories tend to teach the readers some important aspects. In this case, I learnt to be more careful and pay attention to the details. The story demonstrates that some alarming factors or characteristics could be identified in case one pays enough attention and follows the voice in his head and doubts that tend to emerge immediately. While reading this story, I realized that not all of them might be as pleasant as we expect them to be. The story also taught me that the first impression that the person might make or some of the pleasant features that might be charming may be illusive. Therefore, it is necessary to provide assessment of the person while considering all the sides of his or her personality and do not let oneself be misled by the facts that we tend to like. In this story, Mr. Blake was lured and mistaken by the tone of voice of Miss Dent.

This story also taught me to think in a different way. In this case, Mr. Blake fired Miss Dent immediately without explaining the reasons for this step. As a reader, I did not fully realize why it happened eventually since she completed her work professionally, and the only drawback related to her was handwriting. The miscommunication that occurred in this case resulted in the threat for Mr. Blake’s life. The author has aggravated the situation and portrayed the issue extremely dramatically; however, inability of one person to personally handle the situation causes misunderstandings. In some cases, I am also quite shy or afraid of confronting the others in face-to-face conversations leading to their failure.

As compared to the aforementioned short story, “Another Evening at the Club” has made more tremendous effect on me. It exposed me to another culture and suddenly made me realize the differences and some of the social rules existing within this society. In particular, it portrays the way Samia has married her husband. It was an arranged marriage, and she fully accepted its conditions. In fact, her husband replaced her father and was expected to provide her with everything she needed, to protect her and the children, and take care of his family. Under such conditions, the females basically become the objects of care rather than the subjects. Their status is quite vulnerable as they are totally dependent on the males, innitially, from their fathers and later, from their husbands. For centuries, the traditions and customs had not changed as I presume. However, while reading and analyzing this story, I assumed that the situation would change in the future and that it is actually different nowadays. Years or centuries ago, the nations and cultures tended to live in isolation; they rarely clashed, and none of the culture claimed to be global. Nowadays, due to globalization, experts assert on the creation of a singular culture and tradition that will spread regardless of the geographic limits. Moreover, there is a certain civilization development, the number of stages that are experienced by any kind of nation. Therefore, the status and perceptions of females and their roles within the society might change in the future, and I truly expect that it actually will.

Another important topic raised within this essay which is irrelevant to the culture is justice and its administration in regard to those who serve. Obviously, regardless of the society or differences in culture, the rich always have had an opportunity to oppress the inferiors. In this case, the servant has been punished for committing no offence. Even when a mistake has been revealed, no apologies were expressed. I consider that such behavior has no justification. However, the author demonstrates the scope to which the absurd might rise and teaches to behave in a different way. Therefore, this story has made the strongest influence on me and forced me to reconsider my perceptions of Arabic culture and the role of females within it. Additionally, it proved that all nations consist of good and bad people equally.

I must admit that “Girls in Their Summer Dresses” has also impacted me greatly. As a young person, I only have certain presumptions regarding the married life. After reading this literary piece, I have realized that a couple has to go through ups and downs in their relations (Shaw, 1939). As the truth sometimes might be toxic for them, it is better to keep silent on the matters that are important for the further mutual living of the partners. The confessions might not always be contributing to the relations of a husband and a wife. At the same time, every marriage experiences the moment when the spouse reveals certain secrets and confides in each other. The quarrels might even free the relations from the possible miscommunications and the issues that draw the partners apart. Consequently, they reveal their offenses and grievances that they have been keeping for a while.

Thus, it is evident that all the literary works chosen are of a great educational significance for learners. However, if I could make this class better, I would include more live discussions on the given topics and drop “The Story of an Hour.” The latter does not really suit the context and is too irrelevant for me; thus, I also omitted it in my essay. Despite its literary value, I consider that it would be better to either focus on the given essays or substitute it by more appropriate one. In addition, the students could be provided with a choice to choose an extra essay personally. It would contribute to more academic freedom and utility for them.

In conclusion, the literary pieces have a great influence on the reader. Some of the stories resonate with us whereas the others are irrelevant and weird. The stories offer the readers an opportunity to experience the feelings of the characters and their thoughts as well to make proper conclusions concerning their behavior in some circumstances. Thus, after reading, they are more prepared for life situations. After completing these assigned readings, I have also reviewed some of my thoughts and overall perception of the world. In particular, I decided to minimize the cases of miscommunications in my life. At the same time, I will not avoid quarrels since they might be more useful than hiding of my emotions and opinions.
