Learn from My Mistakes in College

A Recent Grad Who Just Wants You to Succeed

Learn from my mistakes in college.

As someone who recently graduated from university I’ve learned a lot, most of it I didn’t apply, but learned the hard way.

Where to even begin…

The people you meet on your first day/week may or may NOT become the people you will spend the rest of university with. I met a lot of girls in residence that were awful people, who I thought were great. Use your judgment and remember you don’t have to be bff's with Becky from down the hall just because she has the best contour and pretty hair.

Party smart. I partied more than I should’ve as most students do. The amount of nights I got blackout is embarrassing; the days ruined by hangovers and the parties the night before an exam really weren’t worth it. Things to remember before a night out are: make sure you’ve eaten dinner (you’re not going to get that bloated and you can still wear your crop top), obvious but necessary is drink water—before, during and after your night—make sure you know how you’re getting home (Uber, cab, walking, DD)—don’t be the drunk girl at the end of the night who can’t even make it home—drunk pizza is the best pizza and will lessen the blow of the horrible hangover you’re bound to get and ensure your crew is people you trust—there’s nothing worse than being ditched by Jen and Becky for some scummy guys at the bar. Party hard, but party smart.

Don’t date just any cute boy you meet. Boys are dumb, gross and we all know it. Don’t fall head over heels for the first one to give you attention. You’re in college, you’re literally surrounded by boys—pick wisely. Choose a guy who shows an actual interest in you, not just what’s under your shirt. Don’t be desperate, if he doesn’t want to date—let him go, he’s not worth a second of your time.

Have fun—be wild, do stupid things, and make amazing memories. Now’s the time, it’s the time to discover who you are, what you like and who you want to be. Go to bad parties, go to amazing parties, have girl’s nights talking about Steve who looked at you for .4 of a second in Sociology class, dress up for Halloween, decorate your room for Christmas. Don’t take yourself or school so seriously—learn to let go.

Find a workout routine that works for you. Not everyone is psychotic and loves the treadmill (like me). There’s so many healthy and fun ways to stay fit. Check out your school gym, if you don’t like weights and machines then check out your schools group fitness classes. Try yoga, pilates, spinning or boxing for a totally fun workout. It helps keep that exam stress away.

Call you parents. Tell your mom how your day or week was, she will love nothing more than to hear from you. Don’t lose your relationship with them over your new college boyfriend Jeff or because Meghan wants to go to a party—make time for them.

Get a good night’s sleep. Don’t stay up all night, just because you can. You will feel 100 percent better, I guarantee. You’ll study better, work harder, party harder and not be a complete grump all the time.

Most importantly, FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. Find what study methods work the best for you, your workout routine, how to schedule your life, and your eating habits. Try new ways until you find something clicks for you.

Keep your chin up, you got this. Deep breath and enjoy it. Nothing is impossible and don't let anyone tell you you can't do something.
