Is E-Learning Better Than Traditional Classroom Learning?

E-Learning

Online learning has become popular in recent days because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and now some are even saying that online learning is going to replace traditional classroom learning. Of course both methods of education have their benefits, but it’s true that online education is gradually becoming more preferred than online learning. There are plenty of reasons for this, of course, and this is what we talk about in the sections below.

Affordability

Several universities in the U.S. offer online degree programs that are comparatively cheaper than their in-person degree programs. Also, there are often additional costs associated with enrolling in a traditional course; you may have to buy textbooks or course-related software. Moreover, commuting costs can add up over a semester.

Online courses are generally more affordable than traditional in-person courses, but this doesn’t mean that every low-cost course is worth enrolling in. Check out program accreditations to see which programs are highly preferred and trusted by reputable institutions. You could waste money on a lackluster course, completely defeating your goal to learn for a low-cost rate.

Flexibility

Online learning is also widely preferred because it’s more flexible than traditional in-person learning. You can learn from the comfort of your own home, and at your own pace too. You’ll submit assignments and exams through user-friendly online platforms, and keeping up with work is simple if you use these platforms correctly. And should you not be able to take an exam, you can always get a reliable tutor to help you out. Just call one and ask: “Can you take my online class for me?”

While online programs are generally flexible, there will be times when you have hard deadlines or exam days. Overall, however, online classes are more ideal in terms of flexibility, and again you could get an online class tutor to do all your work for you.

Self-Paced Learning

When there is a discussion in a traditional classroom, students share their views and opinions and the professor contributes and/or facilitates as needed. An unfortunate downside of this setup is that professors can’t fact-check in real time. But in an online learning environment, both students and professors bring facts to the table. And although online discussions often include dozens of students, you can find time to contribute in a meaningful way if you pace yourself and prepare properly. Self-paced learners always have great insight, so you should strive to be one.

Digital Literacy

In traditional classroom learning, you have to be physically present, and you don’t need to be tech savvy to take a course. But online classes require you have some digital literacy, after all you’ll need this to navigate through virtual learning portals. Of course you won’t need programming skills, but knowing how to use applications is essential if you want to achieve a high-quality education. Fortunately, many courses offer tutorials so you know how to use their platforms.

Online Class Interactions

It’s a misconception that online students don’t get to interact with their professors and classmates. Online students can interact through emails, video conferencing, social media, and other options. Studies even show that less confident students come forward to interact freely on virtual learning platforms. Additionally, participating in online discussions is more comfortable than participating in traditional classroom discussions, where you’re often the center of attention once it’s your turn to speak.

Distractions

Distractions are inevitable in both online and traditional classrooms. You may be physically present in a traditional classroom but your thoughts may be wandering elsewhere. In online classes, social media, mobile phones, and TV are common distractions that can impact how you study. However, those distractions can be dealt with if you stay motivated. Lastly, rewarding yourself for all minor accomplishments and targets will help you stay focused on your studies.

Online Learning Is Eco-Friendly

Traditional classroom learning requires buildings, desks, textbooks, electricity, etc. Also, commuting to campus every day increases your carbon footprint. With online education, you can get a high-quality learning experience without ever leaving your home. As learning is completely done online, there is no need for textbooks to be printed. All assignments, exams, and essays can be completed and submitted online. In short, online classes require very little paper, and this is great for the environment.

Some universities have already adapted the blended learning approach in their curriculums. Technology will continue to influence how we learn, but one can say that traditional classroom education will always have some importance. After all, you’ll need laboratories and other facilities to complete some work. But online learning’s popularity will continue to grow, and right now you have a special opportunity to take advantage of it!
