The two most problematic points, possibly for Canada that were acknowledged by the indigenous rights declaration I believe, were the rights around self-determination and being able to practice their culture. Both of these points feed into one another, and the bigger aspect is how these impact Canadians as a whole businesses and overall the functioning of Canadians society. In order to show a more deep understanding of this we have to look at how culture is impacted by self-determination and how these things impact Canada as a whole. The deep rooted historical issues here also impact both conversations because Canada was built by the British, who took away the rights of indigenous people, and this document in another itself is holding the colonized countries responsible for helping their indigenous citizens.
Self determination is the ability or the right of one person or a group of people to be able to govern themselves. This key aspect of self-determination and self governance is the building block towards all indigenous right now. The issue that I believe that Canada would have with this is that in order to give indigenous people proper self determination, they need to be able to function as their own nation, so be able to have their own rights and practises their own culture Languages away from Canada well, still living in Canada and what are the issues with this self-determination is that it’s difficult to figure out to what extent as the country Canada that we let indigenous people become their own group and society. over the course of history we’ve seen many instances of Canada, struggling with self determination and giving indigenous people autonomy over their land and rights. this lack of autonomy for many indigenous people under colonialist practises from the British, including residential schools, and then being forced on to reserve land has created a significant amount of tension between the Canadian government and indigenous groups. As many of them are fighting for the rights that they had before colonization and colonialism took over their land, and Canada is still trying to maintain its connectedness as one nation. Which has impacted the indigenous people through elements like education, land rides laws. Education has been an issue because many reserve lands do not have access to schools and therefore forced to go into bigger communities that speak predominantly English or French in order to get their education in one of those main languages, therefore taking away from their independence as a culture through their language and taking away their self-determination. We can also see their land rights being a hot button issue for oil companies and Canada‘s profit as they have tried to get indigenous people to sell their land to these corporations or forcefully, take it like in the Oka crisis. The legal system is also impacted by self-determination with many indigenous people being able to practice some degree of legal decision-making within small community issues however, when it comes to bigger issues, they do have little say in the matter. all of the elements within self determination also impact culture.
Culture is a very important aspect in reconciliation for the indigenous people as that is what was stripped away from them by colonization. The reason that I believe that culture is difficult thing for Canada to adopt an accommodate is because Canada‘s worked so hard to build its own culture and identity and going off the idea of trying to unionize Canadians as one group of people the government has a difficult time, admitting that Canadians are broken up into different groups inside of Canada. In order to maintain and protect indigenous culture, there needs to be barriers and changes made to make sure that indigenous people are not forced to assimilate into Canadian society and culture. Canada is still having difficulties doing this to this day with issues like access to basic resources to meet needs and reserves, education and healthcare feeding into culture. The lack of resources on reserves, including clean water access to healthy food and access to healthcare being a problem has a level of dependency to people living on reserves for outside help or assistance, such as buying bottled water, getting food from far away, grocery stores or going to a hospital off of reserve land. Being need for some of these people adds to that force assimilation piece because you can’t meet your needs where you are you were going to have to move which means integrating into Canadians society and this point in time there is very little resources for indigenous people to keep their culture after moving off of reserve lands.
ultimately, all of these deeper issues affect Canadian culture. Use an order to properly meet these rights that indigenous people are supposed to have. We need to change our way of life as Canadian citizens to its degree instead of giving these people these rights and theory if we give them these rights and practice that changes our practices. An example of this practice change in the way that we live is instead of just having French and English we need to also incorporate native languages into areas that are around reserves and we can see this being incorporated to a degree in some parts of Calgary. By adapting to the rights of indigenous people, many reserves and other programs will require more funding to allow indigenous people to gain self determination and rebuild their culture to a degree that actually serves them. It also means that as Canadians are education system, as the possibility of changing in the last 20 or so years, we have seen major changes in our education system already with programs like aboriginal, studies and learning about residential school schools in our education system, however, these changes will need to be geared more towards accommodating the indigenous culture. I believe that on our end is Canadians. This is the least we can do to allow a nation that has become so damaged by colonialism to blossom and flourish once again. I also believe that we are capable as a nation of accommodating their culture and self determination without taking away from our own.
In conclusion, I believe that the Canadian government should’ve wholeheartedly adopted the declaration as it is an active way of both reconciliation and building up a vibrant and beautiful culture in our society. I’m not by giving the indigenous people proper self termination and access to their culture that will improve the quality of life for the indigenous people and it will have little to no impact on the quality of life for Canadian citizens. Respecting their culture and their right to self determination, we will be giving them access to education and their own language, and through traditional means the ability for them to use their land as they please, and giving them the ability to thrive and live independently on that land through access to, basic resources like clean water, healthcare, and food. By allowing this independence and accommodating it, we help to reconcile our wrongs.
