In the Middle of Love"
Not every love story has just two sides.

One girl. Two hearts. A choice that changes everything.
I never meant for it to get this complicated. One day, life was simple—classes, laughter, and the occasional heartbreak over silly things. But when love came, it didn't knock gently. It barged in, wild and uninvited, dragging two names with it: Ayan and Zayn.
We had all been best friends since school. The kind of trio people admired and occasionally envied. I was the glue, the calm in the chaos they often created. Ayan, with his quiet nature and poetic soul, always knew how to listen. Zayn, bold and carefree, filled every room with light—even when he didn’t mean to.
For years, we were just that—friends. But hearts change, and people grow in ways they don’t always plan.
It was Ayan who told me first.
We were sitting under the old peepal tree by the river, where we often went to escape everything. The sky was grey, hinting at rain, and his words felt just as heavy.
“I’ve loved you for a long time, Meher,” he said, not looking at me. “I just never thought I’d be brave enough to say it.”
The wind paused. My heart did too.
“I don’t want to ruin what we have,” he added, voice trembling, “but I can’t keep pretending.”
I didn’t know what to say. I cared about him, deeply. But love? Was it the kind that grows with years of knowing someone or the kind that shakes you to the core?
I didn’t know.
And then came Zayn.
He was always unpredictable. So when he showed up at my door one evening, soaking from the rain and panting like he’d run a marathon, I didn’t expect him to say what he did.
“I thought I’d never say this,” he said, wiping water from his forehead. “But I can’t keep watching you slip away. I love you, Meher. I always have. I was just too scared you’d never feel the same.”
Lightning cracked behind him, but it was his words that lit up everything inside me.
Two confessions. Two hearts.
And me? Stuck in the middle.
Days passed in silence. I avoided both of them, afraid of what would happen if I chose… or if I didn’t.
I started seeing the small things I had missed before. The way Ayan looked at me when I laughed. The way Zayn got jealous without realizing. The way I felt different around both of them.
Ayan made me feel safe, understood. We could sit for hours in silence and still feel like we’d said everything. He wrote me letters—long, thoughtful words folded into tiny paper cranes.
Zayn made my world louder, brighter. He challenged me, teased me, made me forget the world when we were together. He was a storm I never wanted to run from.
But love isn’t just about who makes you feel good. It’s about who your soul reaches for in the quiet.
One day, I asked them to meet me at the tree.
Ayan came with his journal, Zayn with his restless hands and nervous energy.
“I have to say this,” I began, heart thudding. “I love both of you. But not in the same way.”
Zayn stepped back. Ayan’s eyes didn’t move from mine.
“I could lie and say I’m sure. That I’ve figured it all out. But I haven’t. And maybe I never will, unless I let one of you go.”
They said nothing.
“So here’s the truth,” I whispered. “Ayan, you’ve been my peace. My balance. But Zayn…” I turned to him. “You’re the fire that scares me and saves me.”
Ayan nodded, quietly. “Then choose him.”
His voice didn’t crack, but his eyes did. And Zayn? He looked like he couldn’t believe it.
“I’m sorry,” I told Ayan, tears falling. “You deserve someone who chooses you first.”
He smiled, that same gentle smile he always wore, and walked away. I knew that even if his heart broke that day, he would heal. Because that’s who Ayan was.
Zayn looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time.
“You really choose me?” he asked.
I nodded. “I don’t know where this road leads. But I want to walk it with you.”
He didn’t say anything. He just pulled me into the rain, kissed my forehead, and whispered, “Then let’s run.”
Months later, Ayan moved to another city, chasing his dreams in a place where memories didn’t follow him. We still talk sometimes. His voice still feels like a poem.
Zayn and I? We’re not perfect. We argue, we laugh, we fall apart and rebuild. But we’re trying.
Love, I’ve learned, doesn’t always give us the right answers. But it asks the right questions. And sometimes, being in the middle of love is exactly where you find the truth.
