Humphrey's Night Out' The Adventures of Humphrey the Guinea Pig

Christopher Weedon & Illustrated by Sandra Weedon

2021

ISBN: 9781838751654

Nightingale Books

27 pages

Who wouldn't want a night out to experience something new and exciting? This is a children's picture book about a guinea pig named Humphrey and his journey outside at night due to a mishap of sorts. So while he is out he visits and explores his outside environment. Humphrey seems to be a very jovial guinea pig who will try anything. Humphrey has a friend named Sooty, who is another smaller guinea pig and they get along well with each other. This is a story of friendship, meeting and catching up with other friends and sharing interests so to speak.

The pictures were well drawn and using vivid yet muted tones of the colors used. I liked the fact that the pictures looked like they were colored with crayons with the way the strokes of the colors went on the page. The print was easy to read for a young child to read or follow along with a teacher who reads the story. The questions at the end of the story is a good way to start discussions and check for understanding and listening skills. This is totally a fun to read for adults and children alike and also about learning trust and how to do it.

The Hooded Sweefa

A.M. Seifried

2021

ISBN: 978-1-83875-218-7

Nightingale Books

26 pages

What an imagination. A.M. Seifried has written a children's picture book entitled 'The Hooded Sweefa'. What is a sweefa? The main characters of Sweefa and Nessa and their job of doing away of evil and bringing love to all even to an approaching villian that threatens the whole town. This could also be a story of learning how to bargain as Frakin' McNutt so soon learns.

A.M. Seifried has written a story that is sweet with a bit of sour, which makes this story pass in my eyes as a very beginning mystery, because Sweefa and Nessa has to find out why Frakin' wants all the nuts. The artwork uses primary colors along with various shading techniques, as in the techniques as in 'Nessa' and 'Sweefa' skin tones, etc. The nature in the forest scenes are realistic and visually appealing to me along with I think any young reader who looks at the book. This is a story to make friends and being a friend in general to all who may approach you.

Teachers could teach a new vocabulary word as in the word 'justice'. They could ask the students 'What is justice?' or 'What do you think 'justice' is pertaining to in the story?' 'Are Sweefa and Nessa being fair to Frakin?' These are questions that the answers are straight forward that could also vary somewhat.

The Superhero In All of Us

Zoe Wheeler & Illustrated by Catherine Stait-Gardner

2021

ISBN: 978-1-83934-071-0

Bumblebee Books

23 pages

How do we feel about ourselves in various situations. We all can learn our special talent or talents and how to use them. Zoe Wheeler has written a young children's book 'The Superhero in All of Us' is about a young boy named Joshua who is dealing with a very common family issue. Joshua shows his favorite things to each of his parents. He dreams of being a superhero and how his new outfit helps him deal with what is happening in his family.

The artwork throughout this small picture book is vivid with primary and secondary colors and the shiny pages and big print make it easy for little hands to pick up and turn pages to see how another child learns to deal with family issues and sharing love. At the end of the book Zoe wrote a letter (acknowledgments) that thanks everyone who helped her in the writing of this children's picture book.
