How to Survive College

A Current Student's Guide

Are you a college freshman or a current student looking for tips to make your life easier? Then look no further than this guide that contains some big tips to help you out.

1. Check your school email often.

This how your teachers will use to contact you about changed due dates and other class related stuff. School events can also get sent to you through email. If you're interested in clubs this is also the main route of communication with them, and students. Want to work on campus? They will also use your school email to reach out to you too.

2. Get your sleep in!

If you're under 25, you will still need more sleep than older adults. Getting enough sleep will help your concentration and motivation. Stress will also affect you and your ability to study more with lack of sleep. You may feel it's necessary to pull an all-nighter for a test or project, that's okay. Remember to not make that a habit and get your sleep in otherwise. Friends may also want to go out and stay out far into the night. While spending time with friends is important, your health should be your main focus. So if they want to go out and you have a big test the next morning or an assignment due, hold off for that night.

3. Try to eat healthy.

It will make a big difference in how you feel day-to-day. In school it can be very easy to only eat fast food all the time. Sticking to that habit can make you feel more sluggish.

4. Do not buy your textbook until after the first day.

Sometimes the book is in the syllabus, but the teacher says you do not need it. Sometimes the teachers are lenient on what edition book you get as well. So save your money! Teachers tend to wait two weeks before starting on the textbook anyways. As students wait to receive their textbooks and students want better deals, that is why they wait.

5. Do not wait to sign up for classes.

Sign up the moment you are able to. As soon as classes open, they fill up very quick. If you want to schedule your classes at times that work best for you, sign up right away. If you do not know when registration opens email your academic advisor or speak with a teacher.

6. You do not need to know your major for the first two years.

You can take general education classes and decide later! It helps to know what kind of field you want to focus on so you can pick general education classes to suit that.

7. Take a smaller course load if you feel you can manage that better.

It is better to take a smaller course load and feel confident rather than overwhelm yourself.

8. If you will be working while in school, you do not need max hours to survive.

Be firm about your scheduling so you have time to get work done. Do not let your work schedule you over class. If you're interested in working while in school, on-campus jobs are a great option. You do not need to travel far for them most of the time, and you get great benefits. Depending on what you will be doing you can get great references through this and it's a great way to make friends!

And those are all my tips for starting out in college! College will be a fun, yet bumpy ride that may be overwhelming for some. That's okay! It is a whole new experience and there is nothing wrong with learning as you go. With these tips, and others you may find from other authors, take these as you will to help you along this new journey!
