How to Study Abroad?

Studying abroad guidelines

International students often have a difficult time where to study. Should they study in their home country? Should they study abroad?

Here are some aspects to consider:

Budget:

Students can study abroad in affordable countries such as Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, etc. Some of these programs vary from 3,000 USD per year and up. Universities within Canada, US, UK, and Australia can vary from 13,000 USD until 80,000 USD just for tuition along. Students still need to consider living accommodation, which is typically 1,000-2000 per month depending on the how standard or luxurious you'd like to live.

University and Program:

It all comes down on what you'd like to study. Would you prefer a prestigious university with status? Are you looking to explore a new city? Are you looking to start a new life there? Most universities will offer the standard bachelors degree in business, engineering, science, information technology, etc. You can always find your major within your budget. What the student needs to consider are they looking for smaller classes? A busy city? Let's face it, studying will not be a full time thing, you'll also need to destress and you'll need an enjoyable place to be. The worst thing is being in a country that you don't enjoy.

What do I typically need to present to universities?

1. Completed application including: IELTS or TOEFL score (English proficiency exam), High School transcripts, High School Diploma, (these documents need to be in English, you might need to have them evaluated by WES, etc), Bank Statement (showing you can pay for the first years tuition and living accommodations.

What happens after I've decided to attend abroad?

Universities will send you an I-20 within the US. Once you have this I-20 you'll make an appointment at the US embassy and bring your I-20, which displays where you'll study, the name of the university and the program you'll be enrolled in. After a week or two, you'll have your student visa which is the F-1 visa within the US.

What happens if I don't like my university?

This is why its absolutely crucial to visit the university before hand, if in the case you do not like your university you can always transfer to another university.

Will all of my credits from the program transfer to the new university?

This varies from university to university, I've seen universities accept the lowest of a B to some universities not transferring A's. Some of the classes that are taught at one university will not/ cannot transfer to the other. It's better to stick with one university and complete the degree there.

What if my English score isn't up to par?

Typically Universities will accept an IELTS of a 6.5 and above, you can always study english at the university. I would always study English at the university you would like to continue with your academics. If you decide to switch universities, they typically do not take other universities English courses, and will require you to retake the IELTS or TOEFL. Pick a university and just stick to it!!!
