As of January 1, 2021, UK nationals are no longer considered EU citizens, and as such, the process to obtain French residency has changed. Here are the steps to obtain French residency as a UK national:

1. You have to determine the type of residency you need: UK nationals who want to stay in France for more than 90 days need to apply for a long-stay visa (equivalent to a resident permit) it is called “visa de long sejour valant titre de sejour VLS-TS” in French and it is valid for a year. There are different types of residency permits available, depending on the purpose of your stay, such as work, study, retirement, or family reasons, however the steps are pretty much the same.

You can check what type of visa you need on the "Consulat general de France website" in UK.

After 1 year, you have to request a temporary residence card (carte de séjour temporaire in French) which is also valid for a year.

Then a multi year residence card ( carte de séjour pluriannuelle) which is valid for a year too.

And finally , you have to ask for permanent resident card ( carte de résident permanent) which is valid 10 years.

2. Gather the necessary documents: You will need to provide several documents, such as a valid passport, proof of financial means, proof of accommodation, and a criminal record certificate. The specific documents required may vary depending on the type of residency permit you are applying for.

3. You can apply for a long-stay visa at the French embassy or consulate in the UK. You should apply for the visa at least 2 months before your planned departure date.

4. Enter France and obtain a residency permit: Once you have obtained a long-stay visa, you can enter France and apply for a residency permit at the local prefecture or sub-prefecture. You will need to provide additional documents, such as a medical certificate and proof of French language proficiency, depending on the type of residency permit you are applying for.

For some visas like visas for spouse of a French citizen , you will requires to sign a “ contrat d’integration” and therefore, you will have to go for an interview where you will be given a French language test.

This test is to find out if your level of French is at least at A1. if you do not pass the test, you will be assigned free French language classes. It will be necessary to pass these classes in order to renew your visa and receive a carte de séjour “vie privée et familiale.”

If you would like to learn French online with tutors before leaving, have a look at Italki who offers lessons from $5 and are taught by native speakers teachers.

There are also useful app like Babbel where you can learn French on the go on your phone or Frantastique which send you personalised daily emails with fun videos and adapt a program to your level.

5. Renew your residency permit: Your residency permit will be valid for a limited time, and you will need to renew it before it expires. The renewal process will require you to provide updated documents and may require an appointment at the prefecture or sub-prefecture.

It is recommended to seek legal advice from a professional immigration lawyer to ensure you are following the correct procedures and to obtain any necessary assistance.

Bon courage! :)
