Step 2: Go to college and graduate

Obtaining a law degree is really important, because it’s one of two prerequisites you need to sit for and pass your state’s bar exam.

According to NALP, which is an association that keeps data on legal education, 36 states require that applicants for admission have either graduated from an ABA-accredited law school or passed an equivalency examination such as a bar exam (NALP 2017).

You don’t have much flexibility here; you must graduate from law school if you want to become a lawyer. One thing worth noting: You can now take the LSAT and GRE for law school admissions purposes (LSAC 2016). Depending on your scores, these tests may make it easier for you to get into law school.

Step 3: Prepare for bar exam

The bar exam is a two-day test of your knowledge and legal skill. Each state has its own laws and requirements, but typically, you’ll need to study both substantive law (the what of lawyering) and practical skills (the how).

Many law schools have practice-based clinics that focus on state-specific exam requirements, which gives you real-world experience practicing with guidance from qualified instructors.

These clinics are also great for networking opportunities with other students and can give you an edge over other applicants if you choose one that focuses on your target jurisdiction.

Step 4: Graduate from law school

Before you can become a practicing lawyer, you need to get through law school. There are many top-notch law schools around that have high bar passage rates and are well respected by their alums (aka potential employers).

Find one that’s right for you and don’t worry if it takes more than three years; if anything, it will give you more time with your books. Graduating from law school with high honors or even as valedictorian won’t hurt your future career prospects either. Congratulations, you’re now ready for Step 5!

Step 5: Pass your bar exam

This is where things get tough. Passing state bar exams are notoriously difficult, and not even half of those who pass make it on their first try.

If you don’t pass, study hard and try again—because practicing law without a license can be disastrous for your career. Once you’ve passed, take some time off and celebrate! You have earned it.
