How Meditation Changes the Brain, Before and After

Understanding the science behind meditation effects on brain function, health and wellbeing

Can neuroscience really tell us how many hours of meditation it takes to change the brain? This question is gaining increasing attention from researchers, health professionals and meditators around the world. With modern neuroimaging, we can now observe the brain before and after meditation and identify which areas become active and adapt during the practice. Some studies are even beginning to explore how long it takes for these changes to occur.

As we transition to the next section, let’s explore what current neuroscience research reveals about meditation and how it supports both mental and physical wellbeing.

Can Science Explain How Meditation Changes the Brain

Meditation has been practised for thousands of years across many cultures and its popularity continues to grow. Today, it is estimated that between 200 and 500 million people meditate globally (*1).

Thanks to advances in technology, researchers are now uncovering how meditation influences stress reduction, blood pressure, immune function, mental health, pain management, concentration, emotional balance, resilience and fatigue.

Dr David Vago has spent over 15 years at the forefront of neuroscience and mind body research (*2). He shares insights from a neuroimaging study showing meditation’s impact on brain function. While significant, he notes science can’t yet measure meditation’s full effects (*3).

Even so, the evidence gathered so far is both compelling and consistent with what many people experience through regular meditation practice.

EEG Electrophysiology and Meditation

There is now around 60 years of EEG research, which focuses on the brain’s electrical activity, in relation to meditation (*3). Participants from a range of meditation backgrounds have taken part in these studies. While more experienced meditators tend to show stronger results, beginners also demonstrate clear benefits.

Common findings from EEG studies include;

• Increased power or amplitude 40 to 70 µv (*3) (meaning greater overall electrical activity in the brain)

• Higher levels of slow alpha activity 8 to 9 Hz (*3) (slow alpha waves are linked to relaxed, wakeful states)

• Occasional theta wave activity 5 to 7 Hz in areas such as the medial frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate (*3) (theta waves are associated with deep relaxation and creativity, the medial frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate are brain regions involved in attention and emotion)

• Reduced delta waves 2 to 4 Hz (*3) (delta waves are usually linked to deep sleep, fewer of them means the brain is not as drowsy)

• Reduced beta waves 12 to 14 Hz (*3) (beta waves relate to active thinking and problem solving, less activity may reflect reduced mental chatter)

• Clear gamma band activity (*3) (gamma waves are connected to higher mental activity and information processing)

What Does This Mean

For those not familiar with neuroscience, these findings can seem quite technical. In simple terms, meditation creates a distinct pattern of brain activity that is linked to positive physical changes in the body (*3).

One key outcome is a combination of a calm, restful body and an alert, focused mind. This is often called a hypometabolic state. A condition in which the body's metabolic rate slows, much as animals conserve energy during hibernation.

In this state, the body becomes more resilient to stress and can recover more efficiently. Some research suggests that this deep level of rest may also support the body’s natural repair processes, similar to what occurs during sleep (*3).

The encouraging news is that this state is accessible to anyone through guided meditation. Many participants report feeling lighter, more relaxed and mentally clear after just one session.

fMRI Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Meditation

Dr Vago’s review of over 20 years of fMRI research shows another important finding (*3). Meditation not only produces changes in the brain during practice, but these changes can also become long lasting. In many cases, the brain continues to function differently even outside of meditation sessions.

This suggests that meditation can lead to measurable structural changes in the brain over time.

What Areas of the Brain Benefit

Research shows that several regions related to emotional processing and cognitive activity are positively affected (*3). These areas are responsible for self-awareness, emotion control, decision making and overall mental clarity.

Protection Against Neurodegenerative Conditions

Studies have also explored how meditation may help protect the brain as we age. One key focus has been on cortical thickness (the width of the brain's outer layer that helps with thinking and memory), which naturally declines over time and is associated with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Findings show that meditators tend to maintain greater cortical thickness compared to non-meditators (*3). In one study, individuals aged 40 to 50 who practiced meditation had similar cortical thickness to those aged 20 to 30 (*3). This suggests that meditation may offer important neuroprotective benefits.

Meditation as a Gold Class Mind Body Practice

With decades of supporting research, meditation is now widely recognised as a leading example of a powerful mind body practice (*3). These practices support general well-being and include relaxation techniques, nutrition and guided group learning.

While there is more to learn, current findings already highlight the value of meditation for mental and physical health.

How Many Hours of Meditation Does It Take to Change the Brain

Positive changes have been observed in both new and experienced meditators, indicating that the benefits can begin from the very first session.

The takeaway is simple: you do not need years of practice to experience results. From the moment you begin meditating, you are already supporting your brain, your body, and your overall well-being. The longer and more consistently you meditate, the greater the benefits you are likely to experience.
