By the end of this tutorial, you'll have everything set up and ready to dive deeper into the exciting world of game development.
What is Unity Hub, and Why Do You Need It?
Before you jump into building games, it’s important to understand Unity Hub—your central dashboard for managing Unity installations, projects, and settings.
Unity Hub allows you to:
⦁ Install and manage different Unity Editor versions
⦁ Organize your projects
⦁ Access learning resources and services
⦁ Log in to your Unity account for features like the Asset Store and cloud syncing
⦁ Think of it as your mission control centre for everything Unity.
Step 1: Download and Install Unity Hub
To begin, head over to the official Unity download page and click Download Unity Hub.
Once the download finishes:
⦁ Run the installer
⦁ Follow the on-screen instructions
⦁ Launch Unity Hub
When Unity Hub opens for the first time, you’ll be prompted to log in or create a Unity account. If you don’t have one, go ahead and sign up—it’s free and gives you access to key Unity services.
Step 2: Install the Unity Editor
To install the Unity Editor—the main development environment where you’ll build your games.
Here’s how:
⦁ In Unity Hub, click on the Installs tab.
⦁ Click the Install Editor button.
⦁ Choose the latest stable version (unless a specific project requires an older one).
⦁ Select additional modules based on your needs (like Android Build Support or WebGL if you’re targeting mobile or web platforms).
⦁ Click Install and wait for the download to complete.
That’s it—you now have everything needed to start developing!
Step 3: Create Your First Unity Project
Let’s put all this setup to work.
To create your first project:
Go to the Projects tab in Unity Hub.
⦁ Click New Project.
⦁ Choose a template:
⦁ 2D Core for 2D games
⦁ 3D Core for 3D games
⦁ Give your project a name and select a save location.
⦁ Click Create Project.
