INTRODUCTION

Communication is a process of conveying information between individuals through a common medium. Communication is a vital part of our daily lives and being able to master the art of communication is one of the most important life skills. Good communication is where what you convey is understood by another party. Being able to effectively communicate is important skill employers look for in finding potential employees for their company.

It is important to improve our verbal communication skills to easily cultivate rapport with others.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

1. Verbal communication: It is a type of communication where the information is shared verbally, generally through a common language. It is one of the most efficient ways of communication because the chances of misinterpretation are the lowest and there is complete sharing of information. To master verbal communication, one must also be good at non-verbal communication like eye contact and body language. Insufficient language skills or not a good dictation can hinder the person’s ability to effectively communicate with others.

People who become exceptionally good in verbal communication can make it a career.

Public speaking is a talent that is honed through good practice and formal training.

Example: Verbal communication takes place in meetings where people share their ideas.

2. Non-Verbal communication: It is a type of communication where the transfer of information through non-verbal platforms such as eye contact, body language, facial expressions, gestures, appearance etc. Body language is the most used and noticeable form of non-verbal communication. The possession of non-verbal communication skills has become way more important because people have become much more emotionally intelligent in being able to use non-verbal cues to interpret the true thoughts and feelings of other people.

3. Visual Communication: It is a type of communication where one perceives information through reading or seeing. It is the fastest way of communication. It is a combination of communication design and graphic design. For example, it used commonly used around the world in traffic light signals, where red means to stop and green means to go. This type of communication is the best example of visual communication. Sign language is also a common example of visual communication.

4. Written Communication: It is a type of communication where the message is communicated between two or more people through a written language. It is advantageous to keep track of information for future reference for a long period. It has the potential to be spread to many people. Books and novels are the best examples of written communication that can be sustained for a long period and can be spread to the masses.

5. Haptic Communication: It is a type of non-verbal communication where people or animals communicate via a sense of touch. The most common use of haptic touch in a business is a handshake. Also, a hand on a shoulder of a person is a supportive gesture.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication skills are defined as the ability of an individual to give or receive information effectively. They are important to properly convey an idea or a thought to an individual or a group of people. Good communication skills make good first impressions on your friends and employer. It is one of the most important skills a person should be good at to grow in his/her working field.

A short story would give a better idea of how important communication skills are, Andy is a young engineer working in one of the most reputable MNCs around the world. He is young and has just started working. He is very good at the work he does for a living. But he does not like to take part in any of the conversations with his colleagues. He thinks it is a waste of time and focuses on his work instead. He continues this behaviour thinking, he is doing the right thing. But, during his first meeting, he finds himself in a place he had never wished for.

The meeting starts and everyone is sharing their ideas about the project and Andy is sitting quite waiting for a to give his ideas about the project. The meeting is over and Andy has not even spoken a word during the meeting. He realizes the importance of communication and later starts working on his communication skills.
