While America is seen by many as a land filled with opportunities for individuals to pursue success and happiness, many of these opportunities weren’t always available to certain groups of people. One group in particular that has had to overcome many barriers throughout the history of education in America is women — in particular, women of color.

From institutions barring females from attending to educators having misogynistic and racist attitudes, the repercussions of women of color not having the same opportunities as many others are still apparent in society today.

Since women of color were afforded staggeringly few opportunities to pursue higher education and leadership roles in organizations throughout American history, they are still having to overcome lingering obstacles and attitudes in today’s modern age to reach positions of leadership.

Thankfully, more educational institutions have begun to invest in initiatives that empower women of color and help them overcome the barriers that stand between them and leadership roles.

Understanding the many profound benefits of supporting women of color in education can give one a deeper and more nuanced understanding of how the educational system in America is improving.

Here are the benefits of empowering women of color in education.

A More Diverse Workforce

As many are aware, there is a dishearteningly low amount of diversity in leadership positions in major organizations throughout the United States. Women of color make up a minuscule percentage of those in these positions, making it clear that there are structural problems in place in both the education system and organizational practices.

By empowering more women of color and increasing diversity in higher education, we could see this change drastically in the near future.

Studies have shown that organizations with more diverse teams are able to generate more innovative ideas and, as a result, improve their business outcomes. This is due to the fact that having a range of perspectives allows teams to ideate more effectively and come up with more varying solutions to different problems.

As such, the more that educational institutions are able to empower women of color, the more innovative businesses and society will experience.

By providing women of color with more support and educational opportunities, educational institutions can play a significant role in bettering society by making it more likely that a diverse array of people will step into positions that allow them to innovate.

When women of color are afforded more educational opportunities, others are able to develop better skills in the realm of cultural competency. Put simply, cultural competency refers to one’s ability to communicate effectively with those from other cultures.

If more individuals develop cultural competency skills in their educational pursuits, more individuals will one day utilize and share these skills in many different industries and organizations. Accordingly, supporting women of color in education can make society more able to communicate effectively and be sensitive and respectful of the cultures of others.

As the world becomes more globalized, cultural competency skills are becoming more important for individuals entering the workforce. When marginalized groups of people such as women of color are empowered in the realm of education, more people have the opportunity to develop the skills that they need to thrive in an increasingly globalized world.

As such, empowering women of color in education has the power to make the world a better place by promoting more effective intercultural communication.
