Disgrace Book Review

One of M Coetzee's most famous novels is "Disgrace." It was published in 1999. The book won the Booker Prize after its publication. The author won the Nobel Prize in Literature just four years after the novel was published.

The Guardian writes that in post-apartheid South Africa, a novel politically motivates readers and can be described as an extreme alternative to excitement.

Lori and her daughter confessed to the violence when a new wave of violence erupted in South Africa. Yet the main character is not seen as the protagonist. This characteristic of violence by both ‘white’ and ‘black’ parallels the post-apartheid South African sentiment where evil alone does not belong to the ‘other’.

Quetzal depicts the full range of human abilities and emotions by preventing deportation to the positive and negative poles of each group.

The novel deals with the ongoing contemporary social and political conflict in South Africa. And the dark background of the country in the crisis. This theme of David's loss of authority, loss of sexuality, and the transformation of the power dynamics of the once-dominant or subordinate groups are presented in various forms throughout the novel.

A 2006 survey of "literary photographs" by The Observer named the work "the greatest novel of the last 25 years" of British, Irish, or Commonwealth origin between 1980 and 2005. It was screened at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. It won the International Critics Award. The novel "Disgrace" has been included in the list of the top 100 most influential novels published by BBC News on 5 November 2019.
