A Thirsty Crow Ingenuity
How a Little Wit Overcame a Great Thirst

Once upon a time, on a hot and dry summer day, a crow found itself wandering across a vast, sun-scorched field. The sun was beating down mercilessly from above, and the land below was cracked and barren. The trees stood bare, their leaves dried up and crinkling in the heat. Even the breeze that occasionally whispered through the field was warm, as if it had been heated by the sun itself.
The crow, parched from the unforgiving sun and exhausted from hours of flying in search of something to drink, felt its throat becoming drier by the second. It was thirsty—so thirsty that it thought it might faint from the lack of water. The crow had flown from one place to another, seeking relief, but there was no sign of any water anywhere.
Just as the crow was beginning to lose hope, it spotted a glimmer in the distance. A small village lay ahead, nestled under the shadows of a few green trees. The crow’s heart skipped a beat. Surely, there must be something there—a well, a stream, or perhaps a water container left outside. It could hardly believe its luck.
With renewed energy, the crow flew toward the village. It soared through the air, its wings slicing through the hot air, and in no time, it arrived at a small courtyard in the middle of the village. To its delight, there was a clay pitcher resting beneath a tree. The pitcher was filled with water, and it shimmered in the sunlight. The crow flew down eagerly and perched on the edge of the pitcher. It peered inside, expecting to see a large, refreshing pool of water. However, much to its dismay, the water level was too low.
The crow tilted its head in confusion. The water was just out of its reach. The pitcher’s narrow neck prevented it from dipping its beak into the water, and the crow could only gaze at the liquid from afar. It hopped around the pitcher in frustration, feeling the weight of its thirst pressing against its body. “What am I going to do now?” the crow thought. “I am so close, yet the water seems impossible to reach!”
The crow sat on the rim of the pitcher for a long moment, its mind racing. It knew that without water, it would not survive for long in the sweltering heat. But it was not one to give up easily. The crow was clever, and it had always been able to think its way out of difficult situations. After a few moments of deep thought, it suddenly had an idea.
The crow flew to the ground and began hopping around the courtyard. It searched the area for something, anything, that might help it solve its problem. After a few minutes, the crow found a small pile of pebbles lying next to a stone wall. Its eyes gleamed with excitement. It had found the perfect solution.
The crow carefully picked up one pebble at a time and flew back to the pitcher. It dropped the first pebble into the pitcher, watching as it sank to the bottom. The water level in the pitcher rose slightly. The crow didn’t waste any time. It flew back to the ground, grabbed another pebble, and repeated the process. One by one, it dropped pebble after pebble into the pitcher.
As the pebbles accumulated at the bottom, the water level gradually rose. The crow worked tirelessly, picking up pebbles and flying them back to the pitcher, each trip a little easier than the last. The sun beat down on it, but the crow didn’t mind. Its thirst drove it forward, and soon, the water level had risen enough for the crow to reach it.
With a triumphant caw, the crow dipped its beak into the cool, refreshing water. It drank deeply, feeling the water quench its thirst and refresh its parched body. It felt alive again, the heavy weight of thirst lifted from its wings. The crow perched on the edge of the pitcher, feeling a sense of satisfaction and relief wash over it.
The crow looked down at the pile of pebbles it had used to raise the water level and thought about the journey it had taken to get here. It had been thirsty, desperate even, but with a little cleverness and perseverance, it had found a way to survive. The crow realized that sometimes, when faced with a problem, all it takes is a bit of thinking outside the box and never giving up. It had solved its problem by using what was available to it, and that made it feel even prouder than drinking the water itself.
As the crow drank, it noticed the other animals in the village beginning to arrive. A thirsty sparrow, a parched rabbit, and a tired squirrel all came to the pitcher, and each of them drank the cool water the crow had worked so hard to raise. They all looked at the crow with gratitude in their eyes, but the crow only smiled. It knew it had done a good deed. It had not only saved itself but also helped others in need.
The sun slowly began to set, casting a golden glow over the village. The once dry and parched land seemed a little less barren now, as the creatures of the village gathered around the pitcher to drink their fill. The crow took one last sip and flew up into the sky, its wings carrying it toward the horizon. It had learned an important lesson that day—the power of resourcefulness and determination.
As it flew, the crow couldn’t help but think, “There’s always a way, even when it seems impossible. You just have to look for it.”
And with that thought, the clever crow disappeared into the evening sky, its heart content and its thirst quenched.
Moral of the story: When faced with a challenge, think creatively and never give up. Sometimes the solution is simpler than you think, and perseverance can lead to unexpected rewards.
