Online Class With Remote Learning

For the most part, remote learning is a face-to-face learning process in real-time remotely on interactive platforms. The number of domestic students studying remotely has risen from 21% to 29% in just a decade. In 2017, over 300,000 university students participated in any online learning (Tran, 2020). During this pandemic, remote learning is used by many schools and universities to hold study sessions without leaving their house by utilizing their electronic devices such as computers or mobile phones. The additional use of communication software such as Zoom allows students and lecturers to conduct online learning. Therefore, virtual discussion can occur among classes. Other applications such as Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams can help share and obtain class material such as notes in word or pdf format. These apps can also be used to submit assignments or have discussions on a particular subject. With this method of learning, student needs to attend the class according to their schedule. Usually, remote learning contains a small group of students where they can co-operate with one another. Lecturers can also interact with students and are available for remote office hours. This method of learning has been shown to benefit those who use it.

One of the advantages of remote learning is its adaptability. Students who do not live near a college campus can receive a degree by remote learning. Online courses give students the freedom to complete coursework on their terms, helping them balance their education, family, and other obligations. Students will complete tasks whenever they fit with their calendar, whether they are watching lectures or taking a quiz (Benefits of Distance Learning, n.d.). Since students have the liberty to study wherever they choose, most prefer their rooms where they are more relaxed. They will save time on an hourly drive to the campus and money on petrol expenses. Instead of paying for gas, students can use the money to pay for a stable internet connection to help them tune in. Fees surrounding student facilities such as dorm or apartment is non-existent. The material covering the curriculum, such as textbooks, can be purchased at a lower cost since it is available in physical and pdf format. Managing time and skill is a must-have capability for a student who studies remotely. Students will most likely find self-motivation in this class, and they will have to maintain their timetable whether they like it or not. Since they are given control over what and when they are going to do in their course, they will most likely build this drive to work harder. Students do not need to adhere to normal class behavior; instead, they could study using their method that accommodates them. Remote learning allows the student to learn at their own pace. A student who learns better in the morning prefers to tackle their more difficult subjects first thing in the morning. In contrast, students who are nigh owls may choose to wait until later in the day after they are entirely awakened and are at their peak mental ability (Emma, 2020).

Furthermore, remote learning can be used to develop IT skills. It is not the fact that they are looking at the screen most of the time (Best, 2020). Since the typical class environment, such as a physical classroom, basically does not exist, the students need to adjust to new systems where additional software is operated to carry out specific tasks. Most of the software is mainly used to communicate where students are expected to install them properly. Over time students will progressively elevate their technical skills, such as capable of running the software correctly and troubleshooting any errors in the system. For instance, a student needs to be on a Zoom call in 10 minutes, but the application seems to reject his demand to run it. Since he/she already knows what to do, troubleshooting takes less than 5 minutes and proceed to go to the meeting.

Moreover, remote learning provides individuals with vast networking opportunities through online platforms such as social media, where social connections can be established. Nowadays, students can interact with peers, but modern technology grants the student access to global communication where individuals worldwide can collaborate. They now have direct access to global business leaders, who can enrich their expertise by sharing their varied insights and experiences to expand their career opportunities. There is an application called Clubhouse where individuals can register their accounts and connect with leaders in big companies, namely Elon Musk and many other big company developers. Not all students are willing to listen to lectures that take 2 hours of their time, here through an application like Clubhouse. Students are more intrigued to learn from people who already prove that they are successful in life rather than listening to a boring traditional class lecture.

Consequently, having aspects such as flexibility could result in developing student’s mindset about deciding and securing a future job before graduating. Learning remotely provides students full access to their academic life as a whole, where students are expected to have a well-planned schedule and excellent time management. When compared to normal education regulation, students must follow a set of rules which means that their activity for the day is fixed. According to university scholars, one hour of training can be followed by 2-3 hours of studying. Using this approach will result in a very long day (How Many Hours per Day Should I Study? 2021). With a significant amount of free time, students can figure out their interests by trying new things. Once they find their interest, those interests will turn into a hobby they will enjoy doing. As time goes by, technology is advancing at an alarming rate, many educational online platforms are being developed. Using one of the online platforms such as Clubhouse, a student will be more open-minded and might decide to acquire work experience for their potential future career, which usually relates to their hobbies. The remote learning method does not provide job experience. However, this is what remote learning seeks to do for those enrolled in the program. Its goal is to be adaptable so that students can use that time to experience the academic syllabus and the real world.

For example, a student is at his/her second semester where he/she begins to develop soft skills like time management and responsibility. The student begins to notice what are his/her passion is. Naturally, the student will do some research about their hobby and decide to pursue a career in that area when he/she graduates.

To conclude the following research, remote learning provides a great range of opportunities for students to grow and develop their passion and hobbies. Students are given the privilege to seek what they want to do later in the upcoming future. With courses that do not interrupt daily obligations, the student can use this chance to improve themselves.
