Studying abroad can be a challenging experience for first-timers, but it doesn't have to be. Here are four ways to increase your enjoyment of the experience and use your time in a fulfilling way.

Enjoy New York From Out of Town

The city is obviously famous for its excitement and excess, but studying abroad in New York gives you a chance to get a feel for the other side of the city.

Bot misconceptions aside, New York is a exciting place to visit and essays about the place often paint a picture of urban blight and constant commercial activity. But amongst all these hubbub is an excellent opportunity to take in the true nature of the place.

From Chinatown to Central Park to the Statue of Liberty, the city exudes a positive picture of its own to visitors who pause to reflect not just on what's happening in their own backyards, but in the larger picture of the world as a whole.

Get Involved in the Chic verse

When studying abroad in New York, any student who wants to immerse himself or herself in the epicentre of the city's social scene must include the midtown district in their itinerary. The midtown is an area that has a vastly different atmosphere from that of any other part of the city, and is a perfect place to go to to get a taste of the mopolitan scene prevalent across the globe.

A walk through midtown alone is a valuable insight into the origins of the American melting pot, as different cultures from around the world have come together to create a unique landscape in the middle of the metropolis. Students can stand in the melting pot of styles and find echoes of the societies that have come to rely on and understand each other through these unique experiences.

Get acquainted with the Big Apple's excellent art scene

Students studying abroad will find they have much more opportunity to engage with New York's art scene when they come into close contact with it. There are a plethora of up and coming artists who regularly showcase their experimental and emerging body of work in galleries and exhibitions all over the city.

With so many different art scenes in such a diverse place, students are always left wanting more, and that feeling of excitement and exploration often translates to increased artistic inspiration and flights of inspiration.

Dramatically alter your perspective of the city

Business skyscrapers and professional splendour normally contrast with the more recent and crisply functional locations of many of the student hostels in New York.

There is a certain type of ramshackle charm that draws you in as soon as you arrive, and it is this that gives the city its appeal. While for many, the classic art deco appeal of the city is strong, there is so much more to see and do than merely standing in teashops grandest public gardens.

While many buildings cost architects and engineers their jobs and may well be vastly superior in design, the student hostels in New York tend to celebrate the art and design that these buildings are intended to represent.

The striking future of the city is evident in its architecture, some of which, like the Empire State Building, have seemingly unbeatable designs.

New York, therefore, becomes a prime destination for art students studying abroad, not only for its exciting and complex skyline, but also for the countless ways that this brilliantly conceived city can be enjoyed.

The break from the norm of the average architecture and art classes on a university trip to New York will be well rewarded with an outstanding experience.
