What is the History of World Humanitarian Day?

World Humanitarian Day was first observed by the United Nations General Assembly, for which resolution A/46/L.49 was passed in the year 2008. The proposal was sponsored by Sweden. In fact, 17 years ago today, on August 19, 2003, the United Nations Headquarters was attacked in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.

In this attack 22 colleagues of the UN Headquarters were killed, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, Special Representative of UNO Secretary-General in Iraq, also died in the bombing. Since then, it was decided to celebrate 19 August as World Humanitarian Day.

This day is celebrated on 19 August because of the bombing of the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad on this day in 2003.
