Ever wondered what roles do forests play in our daily lives? How much important they are for the survival of humans or other living organisms?

Forests play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of our environment. The papers we write on, the newspapers we read, the fruits we eat, and most important the air we breathe in, everything is just because of trees present all around us.

According to the data collected by the Food and Agriculture Society in 2020, almost 31% of the total landmass of the world is covered by forests. These forests have more than 60,000 different tree species, serve as home to about 80% of land biodiversity, and approx 1.6 billion people are dependent on forests for their survival.

Remember the last apple or orange you have eaten? It must have been plucked from a tree. It has been found that more than 50%of the fruits we consume are collected from forests only. Various spices and herbal medicines which we use in our day-to-day lives come from trees only. Overall we can conclude that the forests are one of the biggest supermarkets in the world.

The furniture we use, the wood used in various musical instruments, weapons, and other distinct objects all come from forests. The lives of several human beings are completely dependent on forests and trees. Different needs of heating, cooking food, boiling water and other renewable energy-requiring activities are performed with the help of woods taken from forests only. Trees help us to breathe in pure and fresh air from our surroundings by absorbing almost 2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide every year!

The words of the 32th president of United States truely describe the importance of trees to the human society:

"A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people."

The water needs of various big cities including Mumbai and New York are fulfilled from forests only. Different water bodies have their source in forests. Not just this much, it has been proven scientifically that greenery helps us to feel relaxed keeping our minds calm and we can think more productively in the lap of mother nature. You might have experienced this, that being close to trees and nature we feel much better and happier than those busy streets of city lives.

Hence it could be assumed that some way or the other trees affect our ecological, social, mental, physical, and economic conditions as well. The forests are also responsible for the climatic changes around us. In fact, the decreasing number of trees is one of the major causes of the increasing global warming issues.

Trees are extremely essential for the survival of creatures on this planet. Still, the wicked practice of unnecessary deforestation activities is at its peak in various parts of the world. Keeping all these points in mind and for spreading awareness among the people regarding the conservation of trees and forests, the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 announced the day 21 March to be celebrated as the International Day of Forests.

The main idea behind this initiative is to run various tree plantation campaigns, increase the activities involving trees and forests and connect more and more people from the different parts of the globe to discuss the possible remedies to this serious problem.

So let's pledge to spread this message of conserving forests and planting more and more trees in our surroundings. One day we would be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, together. With this commitment wishing you all a very Happy World Forest Day!
