What is the Mandela Effect

In the past two years, there has been a very hot and mysterious topic, and that is the Mandela effect. At first, I thought it was amazing and concerning, but then I gradually figured it out and didn't care much about it. Today I would like to talk to you about the Mandela effect and the various possibilities for producing it.

First, let's introduce what the Mandela effect is. Mandela in this context refers to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of the South African nation. Mandela led the anti-apartheid movement, was convicted of plotting to overthrow the government, and was jailed. This prison was held for 27 years, from August 1962 until his release in February 1992. During this time it endured inhuman torture. he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became the first black president in South Africa's history in 1994. he finally died of a lung infection in 2013 at the age of 95. Judging from Mandela's experiences alone, the Mandela effect would give some understanding of the spirit of the loyal wife, a spirit that follows Mandela's example and is not afraid to suffer. However, this was not the case. The Mandela Effect also begins with the recollections of some internet users.

Back in 2010, it was mentioned that they remembered that Mandela had died in prison in the 1980s, during which Mandela's funeral and related news could be presented. This statement was approved by some internet users. 2013 saw the death of Mandela and the statement that Mandela had died back in the 1980s was mentioned again. This time, more people responded to the statement, questioning their memories and expressing shock at Mandela's death. The comment continues to gain momentum, with netizens around the world echoing it. To this day, there are still people who hear of it and express their approval.

This reality does not fit with people's collective memory, hence the name Mandela Effect. The Mandela effect is not an isolated case. Netizens all over the world can find other things that do not match reality and memory. After the big fire in China, netizens started looking for the Mandela effect. For example, everyone's memory of the 86th edition of Journey to the West is that Yang Lida put the oil in the pot first, the truth is otherwise. Love China has 56 nationalities, but the truth is that there are 56 constellations. There is also China's "Mandela", the noon horse. He is also recorded as having died long ago, but he only died in 2013.

In response to these three events, I will briefly analyze the reasons for the Mandela effect. The first time I went west, I first went to make sure there was no frying pan episode. People may remember this episode because of another Journey to the West, the 94th version of the Journey to the West anime. I loved watching this anime back in the day as well. It aired on CCTV and I think a lot of people have seen it. I specifically went to review it and the truth came out. In episode 28 of The Great Sage Destroys the Three Devils, 8 minutes 30 seconds in, Yang Li Tai Sin presents the frying pan challenge. So it was people who substituted the plot of the 94th edition of Journey to the West Animation into the 86th edition of Journey to the West. Although one is an animated film and the other a live-action drama.

The biggest quibble with Er Ai's My China is that people don't believe it's 56 constellations rather than 56 nationalities, and the real lyrics seem to make no sense. Not to mention that the lyrics that follow are 56 brothers and sisters as one family and 56 languages combined into one sentence. The unbelievable nature of the lyrics makes it seem like you heard a nation before, not a constellation.

The third-afternoon horse, the news of his death, actually emerged back in 2005. But unlike in Mandela's case, Wu Ma was an actress who was always filming and making public appearances. So most people didn't care about the rumors. So after Wu Ma's death, some people recalled reading such reports and felt that a Mandela effect had occurred.

With the three things above, you can probably sum up some of the reasons. Next, I'll diffuse my thoughts on what I think are the possibilities for the Mandela effect.

1. Herd mentality

People's first reaction to the emergence of the Mandela effect is one of magic or mystery, and it is found that many people have experienced this. I should have one myself, otherwise, I would appear to be out of touch or down on my luck. One confuses one's memories to be 'in sync' with others.

2. No validation

If you are willing to verify these events, you will find that your memory is wrong. Sometimes there is plenty of evidence to prove it, but most people rely on their memories to recall the events in question when they see them, so the Mandela effect is bound to occur whenever the memory is faulty.

3. Reasonableness

Sometimes events are unreasonable in reality, such as the lyrics of "Love Me China". We will remember the past as we think it is reasonable. Eventually, the memory becomes what you think it is.

4. Memories are inherently unreliable

We always trust our memories without realizing that most of our memories are unreliable. Perhaps we have the experience of recalling a naughty moment as a child and then sharing it with our parents, only to have it dismissed. In this case, it is of course possible that the parents forgot and didn't take it to heart, but it is also possible that they misheard. In our daily lives, there is a high probability that we remember things wrongly. Because most of my memories are repaired or filled with some experiences that I saw, thought about, and heard, especially some bad ones, these may be for protection or satisfaction. And the memory may also give a memory that fits the Mandela effect to validate your correctness.

5. Too many rumors and misinformation

We always hear rumors about famous people from time to time, but they are usually not necessarily connected to our lives. We just listen to them, so we only leave a general impression. Besides, we don't know if it's true or not without verifying it. But when we encounter the facts, memories flash back and the Mandela effect appears.

I recall that on the morning of 22 May 2021, the news of Academician Yuan Longping's death spread through some major media, and those who knew about it paid tribute to Yuan. But he was immediately dismissed, claiming that Yuan Lao was only in poor health and was in the hospital. In the afternoon, Yuan Lao left us. Within a day, things reversed and reverted. When the information is not fully known, there are three kinds of people. The first type is those who hear the first news and don't know the middle reversal. They would think that Yuan Lao had died in the morning. The second is those who know about the reversal but do not know that Elder Yuan died. They would think that Elder Yuan had not died. The third is those who know that Elder Yuan is dead but do not know about the reversal. They would wonder why anyone would know about Elder Yuan's death in the morning. Elder Yuan had died in the afternoon. Is it the Mandela effect?

Besides, to make money, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet, and people are often misled, so it is easy to get confused about the truth of something, which can easily lead to the Mandela effect.

6. A parallel universe where history has been tampered with

Is this possible? It might be possible! But we can't prove it. To be honest, I want parallel universes and history to be tampered with to be true because it is a possibility that we challenge reality. So as long as it can be proven, I'll concede that the existence of the Mandela effect is real.

After all, the Mandela Effect is a definition that has not been proven by scientific research. I think the Mandela Effect is popular because it is in line with human nature, bringing together compelling causes such as herding, memory confusion, parallel universes, historical falsification, etc. It gives those who spread the word a talking point and a flow of traffic. Something like this may happen again in the future. If we are brave and diligent enough to learn, we can see the truth and not be deceived!
