What Is Climate Change?

The Earth naturally has a system called the greenhouse effect. Certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun and keep the planet warm enough to support life. Without these gases, Earth would be far too cold.
The problem happens when human activities release too many greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This causes the planet to trap more heat than normal, leading to rising global temperatures.
Main Causes of Climate Change
Several human activities contribute to climate change, but some have a much larger impact than others. Here are some of the causes of climate change.
- Burning Fossil Fuels - The biggest cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. These fuels are used for electricity, transportation, factories, and heating. When fossil fuels are burned, they release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. CO2 is one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for trapping heat. Cars, airplanes, power plants, and industrial facilities all add massive amounts of carbon emissions every year.
- Deforestation - Forests play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. Trees act like natural air filters, helping balance the atmosphere. When forests are cut down for farming, construction, or logging, fewer trees are available to absorb CO2. At the same time, cutting and burning trees releases stored carbon back into the atmosphere. This makes deforestation a major contributor to climate change.
- Agriculture and Livestock - Modern farming practices also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock such as cows produce methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat even more effectively than carbon dioxide. Fertilizers used in agriculture can release nitrous oxide, another gas linked to global warming.
- Industrial Pollution - Industrial pollutions are in the factories and manufacturing plants release large amounts of emissions during production processes. Industries that rely heavily on fossil fuels can significantly increase air pollution and greenhouse gases.
Effects of Climate Change
Climate change affects nearly every part of life on Earth. Some effects are already happening, while others are expected to become more severe in the future. Here are few of so many effects of climate change:
- Rising Temperatures - One of the clearest signs of climate change is the increase in global temperatures. Many regions around the world are experiencing hotter summers and longer heatwaves. Extreme heat can affect human health, agriculture, and water supplies. Vulnerable groups such as children and older adults are especially at risk during heat-related disasters.
- Stronger Storms and Extreme Weather - Warmer oceans and changing weather systems can lead to more intense hurricanes, floods, droughts, and wildfires. Some areas experience heavy rainfall and flooding, while others suffer from severe drought conditions that damage crops and water resources. These disasters can destroy homes, disrupt communities, and cause billions of dollars in damage.
- Melting Ice and Rising Sea Levels - Glaciers and polar ice caps are melting due to rising temperatures. As ice melts, sea levels rise, putting coastal communities at risk. Low-lying cities and islands may face increased flooding and erosion in the coming years.
- Threats to Wildlife - Animals and plants depend on stable environments to survive. Climate change disrupts ecosystems and forces many species to migrate or adapt quickly. Renewable energy produces far fewer greenhouse gas emissions and can help reduce dependence on coal and oil. As technology improves, renewable energy is becoming more affordable and widely available.
- Protecting Forests - Planting trees and protecting forests can help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Reforestation projects around the world are working to restore damaged ecosystems and improve air quality. Reducing deforestation is equally important for protecting biodiversity and slowing climate change.
- Using Energy More Efficiently - Simple changes in daily life can also make a difference. Using energy-efficient appliances, turning off unused electronics, and reducing unnecessary energy consumption can help lower emissions. Public transportation, biking, walking, and electric vehicles can reduce pollution from transportation.

International cooperation is also essential because climate change affects every country, regardless of borders.
