What is actually Hiding Underneath the Sahara Desert?
A once bountiful Savannah but gradually turns into what we know today as the Sahara Desert.
One of the world's least hospitable places right now is the Sahara Desert. However, it wasn't always like this. You can't possibly imagine the mysteries of the past that are hidden in the sands of the Sahara. Hidden beneath its surface are long-lost cities. Massive lakes that once fed a fertile Savannah landscape And fresh data suggests that the Sahara might hold a hint as to where Atlantis is. Join us as we explore the undiscovered world that lies beneath the Sahara Desert by digging through the sands of time.
The Sahara is very large. It covers almost the entire northern region of the continent of Africa. The desert is one of the world's largest, at roughly 3.5 million square miles in size. And while the Sahara's dunes and overall size are impressive, what lies beneath its sands is arguably this region's most astounding feature. There is the remnant of a massive lake that existed in the western Sahara around 250,000 years ago, deep beneath the sands.
When we look at the Sahara today, it might seem impossible that the area once held significant quantities of water, but we now know that it did thanks to evidence gathered by scientists. The Wadi Tushka region of Egypt was where the Nile River flowed hundreds of thousands of years ago. The Sahara was completely submerged in water during the flood. The lake itself may have covered more than 42,000 square miles, which is the craziest part. It was therefore the second-largest lake in the entire world.
Around 250 miles from the current location of the Nile's water flow, scientists discovered fish fossils buried beneath the Saharan sands. This merely demonstrates the extent of the mega lake's coverage in the area. Even prehistoric human remains have been discovered that match the lake's location, according to archaeologists. As they traveled across the dry land, this was probably a crucial resource for our ancestors. The only reason people could have stayed in this region of the desert for any length of time would have been if there had been something resembling a massive oasis that beckoned travelers to stop and rest on its bountiful shores.
The lake was probably an important stopping point for human migrations out of Africa. Without the formerly enormous lake and the rivers feeding into it, it's possible that people would not have been able to cross the Sinai Peninsula and enter the Middle East, from which Homo sapiens later spread to the rest of the world. The existence of the mega lake and human expansion past the Sahara Desert may have been better for the planet overall, but hindsight is always 20/20. Underneath the Sahara Desert's sands, there are a startling number of human structures and artifacts. Atlantis, one of the most sought-after lost cities in the world, may have remnants, according to recent evidence of human activity near the Richat Structure in the western Sahara.
The Richat Structure is a truly amazing structure. Similar to how Plato described the city of Atlantis in his writings, this geological feature has a series of rings radiating from its epicenter. The Richat Structure is not man-made, to be very clear. The flat rock layers between the rings have been exposed as a result of erosion along a naturally occurring geologic feature called a domed anticline. When a volcano erupted in the past and the magma cooled, it took the shape of this feature. The concentric rings of the current Richat Structure were created by the magma as it hardened and started to weather.
The outer rings of the structure's rock formation contain the structure's oldest rocks, with each inner ring becoming younger the further it is from the center. Although the Richat Structure in the Sahara Desert is about 28 miles across and is composed of both igneous and sedimentary rocks, the real question is whether or not it was once Atlantis.
In the west African nation of Mauritania, you can find the Richat Structure. The main issue with this theory is Plato's assertion that Atlantis was engulfed by the sea. And because the Sahara Desert is a desert, there isn't much water there to have flooded anything. But we are aware that the Sahara was not always a dry desert. In actuality, as you will discover, the Sahara used to look very different. Perhaps the ancient civilization that lived inside the Richat Structure was flooded by a sizable body of water in the area. Perhaps this is the basis for the story of Atlantis, and Plato merely exaggerated certain elements of the tale to make his point.
In either case, the Richat Structure would need to contain human remains in order to be legitimately identified as the site of Atlantis. Due to political and social unrest, the area itself is unsafe to conduct extensive excavations. Due to the area's remoteness, getting there is also challenging. This indicates that no serious expedition to search for artifacts or buildings inside the Richat Structure has been able to be mounted by archaeologists. However, over the past few years, technology has made enormous strides, enabling archaeologists to conduct surveys without placing their feet on the ground.
The Richat Structure contains several anomalies that have been identified by scientists as the foundations of ancient buildings. There are also claims that the Richat Structure has yielded stone age tools, spear points, and other prehistoric human artifacts. Although there is no proof that a highly developed Atlantean civilization existed within the Richat Structure's rings, the mere fact that there was a human presence is incredibly intriguing.
Although archaeologists and other academics are skeptical of this assertion, many people think that the concentric circles are consistent with the description of the city of Atlantis provided by Plato in his Timaeus Dialogues. The mysteries buried in this region of the Sahara Desert won't be revealed until more research can be done and a substantial excavation inside the Richat Structure is carried out.
The finds of countless other archaeological excavations in the Sahara, which have uncovered some of the most amazing catches of artifacts from throughout human history, are not a mystery. These excavations have given us a thorough understanding of the civilizations that once called the Sahara home.
Archaeologists have also used satellites in the Libyan Sahara to locate what is buried beneath the sands in some of the desert's most difficult-to-reach locations. They were able to find traces of the actual Garamantes civilization, which had been thought to have vanished. In the desert, these people constructed enormous forts and sizable settlements. The fact that the buildings were constructed thousands of years ago is what is most impressive.
The settlements have since been covered by the Sahara's sands, but archaeologists have discovered pottery, tools, and other artifacts that demonstrate that these forts and settlements were constructed by a very strong native African kingdom. The Garamantes sites' close proximity to one another is their most striking feature. Within a comparatively small area, there are fortifications, cemeteries, and agricultural fields. This indicates that the population was sizable. In addition to sophisticated urban planning, the Garamantes had advanced knowledge of metallurgy, produced fine textiles, and used a distinctive writing system to record information.
The discoveries made by archaeologists at the Garamantes sites grow more astounding as they dig deeper. It is obvious that these towns and fortifications belonged to a state-level society, which would have been challenging to uphold in the desert sands. The Garamantes had sophisticated techniques for extracting water from the ground because they had large populations in an area of the world with very little rainfall. It is believed that this advanced ancient civilization transformed isolated oases into the arid Sahara Desert in order to house entire populations and facilitate trade routes. Sadly, their sophisticated irrigation techniques and capacity to turn the desert into lush fields probably contributed to the downfall of the Garamantes.
It's often instructive to learn about the extent of human hubris from what lies beneath the Sahara. The Garamantes eventually ran out of water as a result of continuously pumping water out of the ground. The area's underground stores dried up to the point of being as dry as the sand because there wasn't enough rain to replenish the groundwater. As this essential resource ran out, the Garamantes civilization started to disintegrate. There was no longer the water they required to grow crops like wheat, figs, and grapes. In search of water-rich lands, the Garamantes people set out on foot into the arid Sahara Desert. Perhaps a good number of them reached the Nile Delta.
It's likely that a significant portion died during the journey or were wiped out by the sandstorms that buried their once-vibrant civilization. This brings us to the core of what has been discovered beneath the Saharan sands. Although the desert is a harsh environment, people have lived there and still do. But trade between settlements was necessary for these people to survive. Larger empires, like the one in Egypt, wanted to import valuable goods across the Sahara. Additionally, misplaced items are inevitable whenever expensive metals, spices, and luxury goods are moved.
Consider the historic city of Timbuktu. One of the most significant stops for trade across the Sahara was this thriving community. Large expeditions carrying everything from salt to gold would be launched from the city. But there were risks involved in every journey. Not just because food and water are in short supply, the desert can be dangerous. Bands of raiders would hide along trade routes throughout history and wait to ambush caravans as they passed.
The traders were already worn out from the journey, and if they lacked adequate defense, robbers would kill them and take their goods. Other times, massive dust storms that could last for hours and have walls of dust up to thousands of feet high would wipe out entire trade groups. It was simple for a caravan to get lost in the desert under these conditions and turn around. There is little doubt that the desert has taken possession of vast quantities of goods, including gold and priceless gems.
However, it would be very difficult to locate them in the vast wasteland. However, if someone were to be fortunate, there might be immeasurable wealth hidden beneath the Saharan sands. Nevertheless, not all is lost. The Valley of the Kings is where some of the Sahara's most priceless and impressive artifacts can be found.
Nearly every Egyptian pharaoh and high priest from the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties were interred here. Their tombs, which were built in the eastern Sahara Desert, contained beautiful works of art, gold statues, and precious gems in addition to the deceased. Although the majority of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings were looted or destroyed long ago, there may still be some ancient Egyptian secrets hidden in the desert.
In terms of power and wealth, the ancient Egyptian dynasties were unrivaled in the area. The Nile River, which provided the empire with its vitality, was the primary cause of this. The Nile gave the Egyptians access to water and fertile silt, which helped their civilization advance and flourish. But a lot of their most striking monuments were built in the desert.
Despite being only eleven miles from Cairo, the Pyramids of Giza appear to be eroding into the Saharan sands. Egypt is home to numerous temples and pyramids that were excavated from the desert sand. The Pharaohs required a secure burial location because they would not consent to being interred in a common grave. As a result, elaborate buildings and tombs were created to house the remains of Egypt's most significant pharaohs as well as serve as locations for god worship.
As an illustration, consider the Temple of Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut, Thutmose I's daughter, built this enormous temple to tell the tale of her life and rule, and it was a magnificent structure constructed in the Sahara to house her remains. She may have succeeded in making it the most elegant building in all of Egypt. But as with everything else in the Sahara, it was eventually reclaimed by the sands.
The temple's ruins are still visible today and are a sight to behold. However, it raises the possibility that there are still more ancient Egyptian buildings and artifacts buried beneath the Saharan sand. However, Egypt was not the only civilization to erect colossal structures such as pyramids in the desert.
In the past two thousand years, the Kingdom of Kush ruled from Sudan toward Egypt. In the Sahara, they constructed their own pyramids and temples, which have been uncovered in its sands. These pyramids were constructed as a replica of the Egyptian pyramids. However, they demonstrate that the Sahara's former inhabitants left countless buildings scattered across the landscape for archaeologists to find.
Surprisingly, there are also ancient Roman buildings buried in the desert if you travel far enough and dig deeply enough. Although the Sahara may seem far from Rome and not a place the Romans would want to extend their empire, if you sift through the sands in the northernmost parts of the desert, you will find Roman walls and fortifications. These are a part of the African Ditch, or Fossatum Africae.
Some contend that, in order to protect the southern border of the Roman Empire, these fortifications stretched over 450 miles. At its height, Rome had borders that reached into Africa and across the Mediterranean. The Romans were able to purchase goods from caravans crossing the Sahara and exotic animals coming from deeper within the African continent thanks to this southern frontier, which was significant. Animals like lions, elephants, jackals, ostriches, hyenas, cheetahs, and panthers were among those mentioned.
These animals were kept as pets by the Roman aristocracy to demonstrate their social standing, but they also served a more sinister function in the Colosseum scattered throughout the empire. Thousands of spectators would applaud in support of the brutal excitement as gladiators battled African predators to the death. Built to ensure that goods from Africa would continue to flow into Rome and to secure the southern border of the empire, the Roman structures were buried beneath the sands of the Sahara Desert.
So it would appear that something unexpected lies beneath the surface of the Sahara, no matter where you look. The most astounding discovery, however, may not be gold, ancient structures, or even the Pharaohs tombs. Instead, how drastically different the Sahara was in the past is the real desert mystery. If you were to travel through the Sahara 10,500 years ago, you would come across patches of dense forests and lush grasslands. That's right, remnants of a once-vibrant ecosystem that supported a wide variety of life can still be found beneath the scorched sands of the Sahara. The most bizarre aspect is how recently this environment existed.
The abundant ecosystem that spanned the northern part of Africa was present in the not too distant past, in contrast to the mega lake that existed in the eastern region of the Sahara hundreds of thousands of years ago. Giraffes, elephants, rhinos, hippos, and other animals could live in this savannah ecosystem. crocodiles, too. Today, any of these animals would struggle to survive in the Sahara. Within a few hours or days, they would pass away. But until a little over 10,000 years ago, these species were able to flourish there.
You might wonder how this is possible. Scientists have figured out the solution. By peering beneath the Sahara's sands and above their heads at the cosmos, they sought an answer to this question. There have been climate changes throughout Earth's history. This is caused by a variety of things, including asteroids crashing into the planet and the tilt of the Earth's axis. This latter occurrence is what turned the Sahara Desert into a Savannah ecosystem.
It should be noted that these natural fluctuations have the potential to drastically alter the climate of the Earth over a relatively short period of time, but that is not what is currently happening to our planet. There is no link between the current climate change and the tilt of the Earth's axis or any other natural phenomenon. This is due to the fact that our climate is changing more quickly than ever before and at a rate that is not natural. Additionally, there is a wealth of evidence linking human activities, such as the release of enormous amounts of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, to the rise in global temperatures and the ensuing changes in climate around the world.
However, data gathered from the Sahara suggests that over the course of Earth's history, the planet's wobble on its axis has changed weather patterns, which is what altered the environment in the region 10,000 years ago. Monsoon rains swept across the Sahara Desert and deposited copious amounts of water on the sands of the area. This flood happened because when the Earth's tilt changes, even slightly, so does the angle at which the sun's radiation strikes our atmosphere.
Rains may cover the Sahara itself if energy input into the atmosphere increases at the same time as the start of the West African monsoon season. Additionally, the Earth's recurring tilt on its axis causes this phenomenon to occur repeatedly rather than just once. There are therefore hints that Savannah's, forests, and lakes once existed in the Sahara as you delve further into the region's geological past.
What researchers have found is that these environmental changes in the Sahara only last for a few hundred years. The good times, when the desert becomes a hospitable landscape for both humans and other animals, are thought to not usually last longer than 500 years. This explains why there are no signs of vast civilizations that once inhabited the entire desert when it was a Savannah when we dig deeper into the Sahara sands. There simply isn't enough time for a civilization to flourish before the desert's scorched surface reappears. But there is a different side to the story for animals like grazers.
The migratory patterns of animals that thrive on the African Savannah almost certainly took advantage of the fertile environment of the Sahara for as long as it persisted because they follow the rains and go where the food is. This is why it would not be out of the question to find the bones of grazers that seem out of place in a desert environment if you looked beneath the sands of the desert in the right places. The Sahara's transformation back into a desert is perhaps even more surprising than the fact that it was once a Savannah.
According to recent research, the Sahara's environment abruptly changed 180 degrees and quickly returned to its present-day arid state between 8,000 and 4,500 years ago. Some scientists think this change occurred far too quickly to be explained by the Earth's axis naturally shifting. After analyzing the data, scientists came to the conclusion that something was drastically wrong and that an unidentified factor caused the Sahara to become desert again when it should have remained a Savannah-like environment for a much longer period of time.
Scientists looked beneath the Sahara's sands to see if they could find any additional evidence to support this change. They gathered some archaeological artifacts, pollen records, and sediment cores. From the gathered information, a concerning pattern started to emerge. The more fertile areas of the Sahara, where people had domesticated animals and permitted them to graze, appeared to be where the first ecosystem changes started. Plant diversity started to decline in this area.
Every time people and their livestock traversed the Savannah, they left a trail of devastation in their wake. The creatures would eat the grass, leaving only bare dirt in their wake. The sun would bake this ground, rendering it incapable of holding onto enough water to support grass regrowth the following season. The Sahara Savannah gradually transformed into the Sahara Desert.
Scientists caution that overgrazing by livestock can have negative effects on any grassland ecosystem, although more evidence needs to be gathered from beneath the sands of the Sahara. This implies that similar desertification processes to those in the Sahara may also take place elsewhere in the world. Wherever overgrazing occurs, there are fewer plants to release water into the atmosphere, which lowers the amount of atmospheric moisture. This lowers the region's humidity, which causes less precipitation.
A negative feedback loop then starts. Fewer plants can grow when it rains less. Less vegetation means less moisture in the air, which means even less rain. It is a vicious cycle that eventually results in the formation of an arid landscape like the desert. It is important to note that the Sahara would have always returned to being a desert because of how the Earth's axis rotates. The Savannah ecosystem, however, probably would have endured for a lot longer if human activity hadn't led to the degradation of the landscape through excessive use of the Savannah ecosystem.
Regardless, Africa is now home to the third-largest desert in the world, behind the Antarctic and Arctic deserts. There are still puzzles to be solved and mysteries to be revealed beneath this sand.
