What happens if oxygen disappears from earth surface for six seconds?
Here is what happens
Can you take a moment to consider what would happen if we just woke up one day and the earth's supply of oxygen ran out . Okay, that sounds a bit harsh. How about we say it disappears for around just 6 seconds? You probably respond, "We could just hold our breath until it passes." Well maybe the longest we can hold our breath is 30 seconds, so perhaps you can)
But have you ever stopped to think about what would happen to the biosphere, the atmosphere, and the planet if we ran out of oxygen for just six seconds? Take a deep breath and appreciate how satisfying it is to be breathing in oxygen, which makes up about 21% of our atmosphere while nitrogen makes up the remaining 78%. Despite not being the most abundant gas in our atmosphere, oxygen is the most vital because without it, plants, animals, water, and humans would not exist as we do today.
So here's what happens: You might feel normal for those six seconds, but in that brief amount of time, so many things can change, be destroyed, and you might not even realize you're still on earth. It will probably not be quite as dramatic as the Avengers movie scene, but it might come close.
Without oxygen, our bodies would be unable to carry out essential functions. Oxygen is necessary for cellular respiration, the process by which our cells produce energy. Within seconds of oxygen depletion, our brains would start to suffer from oxygen deprivation, leading to loss of consciousness. Without immediate access to oxygen, brain damage and death would occur within a few minutes.
What about the animals,
Nearly all animals, from small insects to large mammals, require oxygen for survival.Just ike humans, animals would quickly experience oxygen deprivation. Many animals have higher metabolic rates, which means they would be more sensitive to the lack of oxygen. They would suffocate and die within minutes.
Plants cannot survive without oxygen either. While plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis, they also rely on oxygen for their own respiration. Oxygen deprivation would cause plants to be unable to carry out metabolic processes, leading to their eventual death. This would have cascading effects on the entire food chain, as plants provide food and habitat for many organisms.
With no oxygen, concrete is just sand. Speaking of buildings, any neglected metal would instantly be joined together. This is due to metals have an oxidation layer that prevents them from welding together so In absence of that layer, metals would instantly attract to each other. If you happen to be chilling at the beach at the time, expect a severe burning from sunlight because the ozone layer is our safeguard against the sun's UV rays.
Also, there would be no fire, no combustion process, and no way for vehicles to move. Our inner ears would explode, there would be nothing to protect us from the sun's UV rays, and we would also get sunburned. Losing oxygen also means losing 21% of our air pressure, which is equivalent to being at sea level and instantly falling down 2,000 meters.
Any kind of transportation that isn't electric will fail outright; millions of cars will be stopped in their tracks and planes will crash to the ground
Without oxygen in the atmosphere, there are fewer objects for light from the Sun to bounce off of, causing the sky to appear entirely dark before it reaches the earth. Oh, and while all of this is going on, the Earth's crust too would completely collapse
You,me and everyone else on the earth would be plunged into chaos as our cherished and presious planet would abruptly disintegrate until nothing was left. That!!! is how vital oxygen is to humans.
Thankfully, you can take a deep breath of oxygen and relax knowing this won't happen and it is merely conjecture and fantacy.
Hopefully....
