It's strange to think that there are rivers, lakes, and even waterfalls within our oceans, but they do exist. These phenomena occur because water density can change due to variations in temperature and salinity. Recently, researchers discovered another one of these ocean lakes at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. This particular lake is unusual because most sea creatures that wander into it do not come back out.
Located nearly 3,300 feet below the surface, the lake is about 100 feet in circumference and 12 feet deep. It looks like an underwater graveyard, littered with the bodies of sea creatures that have ventured inside. According to a report in the Journal of Oceanography, this lake, dubbed the "Jacuzzi of Despair," has water that is about five times as salty as the surrounding water and contains high concentrations of methane and hydrogen sulfide. These factors prevent it from mixing with the surrounding ocean water. The lake is called a Jacuzzi because its water temperature is 65 degrees Fahrenheit, much warmer than the surrounding water. This deadly lake likely formed as seawater seeped into cracks in the seabed and mixed with the region's subsurface salt formations. Methane gas then bubbled up, bringing the deadly water with it.
Next, let's talk about dark matter. Dark matter is something we've never seen, but it is believed to make up about 27% of the universe. Researchers infer its existence from the gravitational effects it has on visible matter. However, according to a new paper by Professor Erik Verlinde from the University of Amsterdam, dark matter might not exist, and neither might gravity as we understand it. Professor Verlinde argues that gravity is not a fundamental force of nature but rather an emergent phenomenon. He suggests that our current ideas about space, time, and gravity need to be rethought, noting that Einstein's theory of gravity does not align with quantum mechanics at large scales.
Moving on, a mysterious sound is coming from the ocean floor in northern Canada, and nobody knows what it is. Throughout the summer, a pinging sound can be heard in the region. The source of the sound remains a mystery, with explanations ranging from mining operations to submarines to environmental activists using the sound to scare away wildlife, making it difficult for hunters. The Canadian military is aware of the noise and is investigating it. Internal correspondence from the Department of National Defense, obtained by CBC News, suggests that submarines were not immediately ruled out but are not considered a likely cause. So, if it's not submarines, maybe it's Santa's workshop getting ready for Christmas.

Researchers from King's College London have developed a new genetic scoring technique to predict academic achievement from DNA alone. Their research is based on a genome-wide association study that examined almost 10 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (the most common type of genetic variations among people) and identified 74 genetic variants significantly associated with years of completed education. Their findings show that DNA differences strongly affect students' educational achievement. On average, those with a higher polygenic score would obtain a grade between A and B, while those with a lower score would obtain a grade below C. Of course, this does not account for effort, and we all know that talent alone does not guarantee success.
