Ireland's Our Living Islands Policy is offering a unique opportunity for individuals to relocate to its offshore island communities by providing a payment of €80,000 (approximately ₹71,00,000). The main objective behind this initiative is to ensure the sustainability and preservation of these island communities.

As reported in a recent article by the Hindustan Times, applications for the scheme will be available starting from July 1st. However, the process is not as straightforward as simply moving to the island and receiving the funds. There are specific criteria that applicants must meet in order to qualify for the scheme.

The Irish government plans to utilize the funds to revitalize and restore dilapidated properties on the islands. Consequently, one of the primary conditions for eligibility is that applicants must own a property on one of the islands, which should have been constructed prior to 1993. Furthermore, the property must have remained vacant for at least two years.

A recent article published by Time Out highlights that this scheme encompasses more than just property redevelopment. Its aim is to rejuvenate and inject new vitality into the islands' infrastructure as a whole.

Overall, Ireland's initiative to pay individuals to relocate to its island communities represents a unique approach to sustaining and revitalizing these regions. By investing in the redevelopment of properties and rejuvenating the islands' infrastructure, the government seeks to ensure the long-term viability and attractiveness of these island communities.

“Good transport services and developed infrastructure are important prerequisites for maintaining island populations. The Department’s aim is to seek to meet these requirements through current and capital investment via the Department itself and through other relevant Departments and organisations,” the statement reads.

Through a statement, the government noted that the policy for the offshore islands was published this month and aims to ensure that sustainable, vibrant communities are eligible to continue to live on the offshore islands for the following years.

The government said that their ambition is that visitors to the islands can continue to experience and also appreciate the unique culture, heritage as well as environmental richness that these islands offer.

The project consists of five high-level strategic objectives identified by islanders as important for the sustainable future of their communities: revitalise population levels on the islands, diversify island economies, enhance health as well as wellbeing services, and empower island communities and build smart sustainable futures.“The aim of this policy is to ensure that sustainable, vibrant communities can continue to live – and thrive – on the offshore islands for many years to come,” the government pointed out in this regard.

The program aids communities on a total of 30 islands not connected to the mainland bridges and cut off by the tides.

Ireland is not the first European state to take such an initiative in order to boost their dwindling population. The following countries also announced that they would pay people who move there:

Italy

Local media reports previously stressed that those who move to Calabria, Italy, could receive a total of €28,000 in different villages.

Switzerland

Authrities in Albinen village in Valais, Switzerland said that those who move there could get more than 20,000 CHF per adult and 10,000 CHF per child.

Spain

In addition to the territories mentioned above, a large number of villages in Spain also announced that those who move to territories such as Ponga, in Asturias, offer, for example, €3,000 to couples moving there as well as a total of €3,000 per child born in this territory.
