THE ‘WORLD’S COOLEST’ STREETS FOR 2022
Best streets to visit
North America
Rue Wellington in Montreal’s Verdun district tops the list this year.
In addition to having “great cocktail bars, fantastic brunch places, some of the finest sandwiches in town, and even a sandy urban beach,” according to Time Out Canada editor Laura Osborne, the street will be becoming pedestrian-only starting in 2023, which will undoubtedly add more cool points.
Yves Lalumière, president and chief executive officer of Tourism Montreal, told TheGlobalNext Travel, “We know that this major boulevard, also known as Promenade Wellington, has been renewing itself in unique and innovative ways for many years now, and it’s incredibly amazing to see how Verdun continues to shine.”
Despite not coming in top, the United States may be proud of the fact that it has the most streets on the list, including Chicago’s Wentworth Avenue, Miami’s Calle Ocho, and New York City’s MacDougal Street, which is home to the legendary cocktail bar Dante.
The trendy Condesa district of Mexico City’s Avenida Amsterdam serves as the country’s representation on the list.
Asia and the Pacific
Five of the top 10 streets are situated in this neighborhood.
Australia’s Smith Street took the top spot on the list in 2021, but this year it has fallen to second. In her article on the list, Time Out Australia’s Eliza Campbell praised the city’s Gertrude Street for being “beautiful, modest, and devoid of the rowdy nightlife of its rather loud siblings.”
On Hong Kong’s main island, Tai Ping Shan, a neighborhood inside a neighborhood, is ranked ninth.
The best parts of living there, according to TheGlobalNext digital producer , are the dog-friendly cafes and the “beautiful blend of old and new.” Shan signifies “hill” in Cantonese, whereas Tai Ping means “peace and stability.”
Zhang Men Brewing’s cherished home on Taipei’s Yongkang Street will make a strong premiere in 2022.
According to Huang Shih-fang, head of Taiwan’s tourism board’s foreign affairs section, “We combined numerous resources to promote this area to international tourists, and we are extremely glad that it is featured.” “Once the border is opened, we expect to attract tourists back to the area.”
Europe
The London-based Time Out magazine went somewhat closer to home for some of its selections this year. Deptford High Street, a combination of street vendors, markets, shops, restaurants, and more, will be the trendiest street in the British capital in 2022, according to Time Out editor Chris Waywell. It will also be the “most active” street in London.
The third-highest entry in the UK is Glasgow’s Great Western Road, which is located farther north.
The fifth place goes to Copenhagen, the city of Denmark, which TheGlobalNext Travel named “Europe’s new capital of cool” last year. The editors of Time Out named Vaernedamsvej as “little Paris” because of the abundance of fresh flowers and wine and cheese outlets. Paris, which didn’t really make the list, must be wounded by that.
Other European streets receiving mentions on the 2022 list include Capel Street in Dublin, Calle Echegaray in Madrid, and Kolokotroni in Athens.
The final of the three, Capel, which rhymes with “maple,” according to Dublin-based travel writer Nicola Brady, “feels like a true slice of ancient Dublin.”
She continues by saying that the street, which was made pedestrian earlier this year, features “wonderful Korean and Vietnamese restaurants that are fresh to the scene alongside modest hardware shops and pubs that have been there for decades.”
