The Docile Squid is not a Kraken

Meglaphobia

Deep in the depths of the ocean is a giant squid. This squid had people creating lore that a giant kraken would rise it's tentacles and take a boat under. This seems to be because of how scary they seem when washed up huge onto the shore when they have passed away. This is the only way anyone has seen them besides pictures because they don't bother coming up towards the surface otherwise.

Sharks are usually more of culprits to be scared of, but of course what is more horrifying is the little poisonous jellyfish, sea stars, and sea urchins that come up from the water. We sometimes don't see them or realize what an issue they are untill already hit with the sting. Just the same as old sea farers came up with the lore of sirens based off of the mystery of the sea and women mixed, the kraken is scary because a deep sea squid could come up from anywhere.

These lores show how people took what was unknown or freaky looking and added a scary story, creating these mythical horrors. Of course Lovecraft had to appear and make a version with wings that also resembled human uncanny valley look. This of course also coming with a cult worship type of lore really shivers all the soaked timbers. I am shocked that there wasn't a myth about a pufferfish instead. It is pretty creepy a fish who is stabby looking going from small to large in an instant when they want. I can she a pufferfish getting huge and bouncing a boat off like a spikey balloon.

It is wild how there is much in the ocean similar to what is on land. Eels are like water snakes and glow worms are similar to ocean fireflies. If only those could be captured and kept in a little water jar. There are some neon fish in aquariums but coming across fish that have their own lights is fantastical. Glow sticks that are alive would make for a great rave party!

The kraken to me would be more almost like a giant version of the mimic octopus. A sea creature who's name is based of looking like an octopus but isn't... So what is it? Mostly just a bunch of moving pigment sacs. They like to sneak around in the catacombs of the ocean, so that seems to be more to the kraken's likeness than the squid. They don't get huge like a squid though but in time there may be a freaky way they stretch or a mutant version of them that could actually become a not mythical version of the lore.

Tentacles are overall more feared even though urchins and sharks have been what mostly harms humans. Good thing urchin spikes don't stretch and reach or else we would be doomed! I do believe that there is a reason cat sharks were only made small, they would definitely be the best ruthless predators. Named after the greatest cutest land predators we have. Plus they have such cool designs! If they were more towards the surface like other sharks they definitely would be the cool ones on the ocean block.

There is much of the ocean we haven't discovered though and the deepest we have searched has been finding snail fish named for being slimy gel fish instead of scaled fish. There could be bigger slimier fish further down that would make for a freaky blob monster. The worst down there could be a tentacle blob with shark teeth. Good thing no fish like likes to spend time towards the surface!
