How High is the Tide?
This story explores several interesting aspects of the tides and was prompted by something I learned during a recent voyage around the top of Australia. Despite having studied oceanography as a post-grad (which included the tides), I’d never known how long ago it was first believed that the tides were mainly influenced by the moon. Surprises abounded.

The Rise of Electric Vehicles
In conclusion, Electric vehicles are the future of transportation. They are environmentally friendly, cost.Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming an increasingly popular option for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on fuel costs. These vehicles run on electricity, typically supplied by a battery, which is charged by plugging the vehicle into an electrical outlet. The first electric car was invented in 1828 by Hungarian engineer Anyos Jedlik, however, it wasn't until the late 19th century that electric cars began to be mass-produced. The early 20th century saw a shift towards internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which were less expensive to produce and had a longer range. However, advances in technology and a growing concern for the environment have led to a resurgence of interest in EVs. One of the main benefits of EVs is that they produce zero emissions. Traditional ICE vehicles are a major source of air pollution, contributing to smog and poor air quality. EVs, on the other hand, produce no tailpipe emissions, making them a much cleaner option for the environment. Additionally, EVs can be powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, further reducing their environmental impact. Another advantage of EVs is that they are much cheaper to operate than ICE vehicles. The cost of electricity is typically much lower than the cost of gasoline, making EVs less expensive to fuel. Additionally, EVs require less maintenance than ICE vehicles, as they have fewer moving parts. This can result in significant savings over the life of the vehicle. EVs are also becoming more practical for everyday use. Advances in battery technology have led to longer ranges and faster charging times, making it easier to drive an EV for longer distances. Additionally, the number of charging stations is increasing, making it more convenient to charge an EV on the go. However, there are still some challenges to overcome when it comes to EVs. The initial cost of an EV is still higher than that of an ICE vehicle, although this is expected to change as more EVs are produced and battery costs continue to decrease. Additionally, there are still concerns about the environmental impact of the production of EV batteries, as well as the potential for strain on the electrical grid if a large number of EVs are charged at the same time. Despite these challenges, the trend towards EVs is clear. More and more automakers are introducing EV models, and governments around the world are implementing policies to encourage the adoption of EVs. Some countries have even set targets for a certain percentage of new vehicle sales to be EVs by a certain date. It is important to note that electric vehicles are not just limited to cars but also includes buses, bikes, trucks and boats etc. Electric buses are becoming increasingly popular in cities around the world, as they offer a clean, efficient alternative to traditional diesel buses. Electric bikes and scooters are also growing in popularity, especially in urban areas, as they provide a convenient and environmentally friendly way to get around. Electric trucks and boats are also increasingly being used for commercial transportation. In conclusion, electric vehicles offer many benefits over traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. They produce zero emissions, are cheaper to operate, and are becoming more practical for everyday use. While there are still challenges to overcome, such as the initial cost of the vehicle and the environmental impact of battery production, the trend towards EVs is clear. Governments around the world are implementing policies to encourage the adoption of EVs, and more and more automakers are introducing EV models. As technology continues to improve and costs continue to decrease, EVs are becoming an increasingly viable option for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on fuel costs.
