White phosphorus bombs

The situation between Russia and Ukraine continues to be tense, sparking global concern.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the Ukrainian armed forces are using phosphorus-containing munitions banned by international law near Gospel airport on the outskirts of Ky iv, and they are using the phosphorus-filled munitions in 122mm -30 howitzer shells and BM-21 rocket shells in an attempt to fend off a Russian attack on the Ky iv airport, Rosa tom reported.

As early as the 1980s, the United Nations Convention on Conventional Weapons (KW) has listed phosphorus incendiary bombs as prohibited weapons, which are not allowed to be used by warring parties. White phosphorus bombs, known as "hellfire", are also known as the most horrific weapons against humanity, causing unimaginable harm and cruelty.

So why are phosphorus bombs considered inhumane weapons, and how horrible is it to be banned?

White phosphorus is a white waxy solid, if there are impurities or light will be yellow, and therefore also known as yellow phosphorus. Learned junior high school chemistry, we know that white phosphorus is the spontaneous combustion of substances, the ignition point is only 40 Regent ℃, and light friction or shock, the local temperature may reach 40 ℃ and cause combustion. White phosphorus burning temperature of more than 800 ℃, and is difficult to extinguish, while emitting a flame and emitting strong smoke. White phosphorus is also a highly toxic substance. Human toxicity dose of 15 mg, lethal dose of 50 mg.

Because of these characteristics of white phosphorus, military personnel made it into white phosphorus shells, grenades, bombs, or artillery shells filled with phosphorous, in combat simply detonate the shell wrapped in white phosphorus, white phosphorus then spontaneously combusted to play a very strong lethal force. This shell exploded in the air, scattering a large number of burning white phosphorus to the surrounding area, the sky scattered flames from the sky scattered, stained everywhere. If human skin is accidentally stained, it can not be washed off in time and is difficult to extinguish, you can only use a knife to quickly cut off the skin attached to the phosphorus fire, otherwise, it will continue to burn until the white phosphorus is completely exhausted or no longer in contact with oxygen will stop, the flesh will be burned through, all the way to the bone, causing great pain and even death to those who are struck.

On the other hand, white phosphorus itself is highly toxic and harmful to humans, the right amount of inhalation or burns will trigger a toxic reaction. And burning produces strong smoke, and eye and nose irritation is great, continuous inhalation will also damage the circulatory system, and even if not burned to death, may also be sent away by toxic smoke.

The reaction of white phosphorus and oxygen will generate phosphorus pent oxide, the gyroscopic effect of phosphorus pent oxide will produce a large amount of white smoke, this white smoke is very thick and long-lasting, and can block the line of sight, but also make infrared can not be located. So white phosphorus is also very suitable for making smoke bombs.

In human history, the first country to use this extremely cruel weapon was the United States. As early as World War II, the U.S. military used a large number of white phosphorus bombs to attack the Japanese defenders hidden in the fortifications of the Pacific islands, there are countless soldiers died under the white phosphorus bombs, when also many Japanese would rather choose to commit suicide, rather than suffer the torture of white phosphorus bombs.

In the Vietnam War after the end of World War II, white phosphorus bombs still appeared on the battlefield. It can be said that in the white phosphorus bomb explosion burning range, almost no creature can escape, and more terrible is not death, but the speed and manner of death. This terrible weapon can cause great double damage to human physiology and psychology, very inhumane and too cruel.

So in the Third Protocol to the United Nations Convention on Conventional Weapons in 1980, white phosphorus bombs were listed as prohibited weapons, and their use against civilians or in civilian areas was prohibited. What was banned, however, was white phosphorus bombs used exclusively for incendiary purposes; if white phosphorus bombs were used as smoke bombs or flares, they were not banned. Therefore, white phosphorus smoke bombs have been retained, leaving a "gray area" in actual combat. In addition, some countries did not sign the relevant international conventions, which is one of the reasons for the appearance of white phosphorus bombs in some wars later.

After World War II, most countries were heavily equipped with white phosphorus smoke bombs. Some countries also find ways to exploit the legal loopholes, white phosphorus into the smoke bombs, which at some point can also play a white phosphorus bombs powerful and horrible effect.

In 2004, during the Battle of Hallelujah in Iraq, the U.S. military also used a large number of white phosphorus smoke bombs to attack civilians in the city.

In the documentary "Hallelujah: The Hidden Massacre," a former U.S. soldier who fought in Hallelujah says, "We were told to be on the lookout because white phosphorus was going to be used in Hallelujah. White phosphorus burns the body, in fact, it melts the flesh to the bone. When white phosphorus explodes it forms a cloud and no one within range of the explosion is spared."

In November 2015, during Russia's war with Syria, the Russians had no choice but to use white phosphorus bombs against the Syrian terrorist group ISIS, more than once, because they could not stand the viciousness of the group.

In October 2020, during the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia, several battlefield videos are showing that the Azerbaijani army also used a large number of white phosphorus bombs as offensive weapons in the Aka region, and the scene was horrific, with screams ringing out in the sky.

The war is too terrible, I hope the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will not escalate and peace will be restored soon!
