The problem of global warming is one of the biggest challenges humanity is facing in the 21st century. Global warming is the phenomenon in which the average temperature of the atmosphere and oceans worldwide increases due to increase in greenhouse gases in the air. Greenhouse gases are gases that have the ability to absorb and reflect heat, causing the greenhouse effect, warming the Earth. Greenhouse gases mainly include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and fluorinated gases (F-gas). The main sources of greenhouse gas emissions are fossil fuel combustion, livestock farming, agriculture, deforestation, and industrial activities.
Global warming has many negative consequences for the environment, organisms, and humans. Some typical consequences are:
Rising sea levels: Due to rising temperatures, ice at the poles and high mountain areas melt, increasing sea levels. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), sea levels have increased about 20 cm in the 20th century and are expected to increase another 30-60 cm by 21001. This poses a danger to island nations and coastal areas. seas, subjecting them to flooding, erosion, and land loss.
Extreme weather changes: Due to global warming, weather cycles around the world are changing, leading to extreme weather phenomena such as droughts, floods, storms, heat, extreme cold, and snow. Extreme weather events cause great damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and human health. According to WMO, 2023 could be one of the hottest years on record, due to the effects of climate change and the El Nino2 phenomenon.
Reduced biodiversity: Due to global warming, many plant and animal species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, bioclimatic changes, and invasion of alien species. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are currently about 38,000 plant and animal species threatened with extinction, accounting for 28% of the total number of assessed species3. Some species that are highly endangered are polar bears, tigers, elephants, rhinos, and dolphins.
Impact on human health and economy: Due to global warming, people face many health and economic problems. Global warming increases the risk of heat illness, infectious diseases, allergic diseases, and cardiovascular disease. Global warming also reduces labor productivity, agricultural productivity, and food security. In addition, global warming also causes conflicts and migration due to water shortages, food shortages, and land shortages.
To solve the problem of global warming, the cooperation and action of all countries and individuals around the world is needed. Some possible solutions are:
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: This is the main and most urgent solution to prevent global warming. Countries need to implement international commitments and agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as the Paris Agreement on climate change. Individuals need to conserve energy, use renewable energy, and reduce the use of vehicles and airplanes.
Adaptation to climate change: This is a solution to minimize the consequences of global warming. Countries need to improve their capacity to respond to natural disasters, protect and restore ecosystems, and promote a green economy. Individuals need to increase awareness and knowledge about climate change, participate in environmental protection activities, and take care of their own and community health.
Research and technological innovation: This is a solution to find new and more effective methods to solve the problem of global warming. Countries need to increase cooperation and investment in research and development areas related to climate change, such as energy, transportation, agriculture, and health. Individuals need to support and participate in technological innovation projects and initiatives that benefit the environment and society.
The problem of global warming is a serious and urgent problem, requiring everyone's attention and action. We need to join hands to protect the Earth, our common home, and create a better future for future generations.
