Musings on Sustainability….

Unfortunately sustainability is a complex world, defined by so many precursors and nuances that to manoeuvre this world you come to realize that it requires understanding of many things.

It requires deeper thought and reflection on ourselves, where we are going and what we wish to achieve and this depends entirely on the choices we make….

…this depends entirely on our own understanding of the world we inhabit.

We are unique individuals, human beings with the capacity for so much more than this, to create, understand and define our lives the way we wish, based upon a notion of co-existence and co-operation as a fundamental basis for human survival would be an interesting start, although that will consistently get a battering. We talk of sustainability as if it’s a given but it is not. It’s taken a lot to even talk about it and accept that we are now at a critical point in our own survival.

The Biosphere, without which life would not be sustaining is testament that we are truly blessed to be able to inhabit a planet that constantly recycles, rejuvenates, replenishes and creates bio-diversity and diversity is a good thing. Diversity increases genetic difference without which life would be stagnant. The universe is proof that diversity is encouraged, because worlds are diverse in the most unparallel ways and life flourishes because of this. Everything we have in our lives is because of bio diversity but it’s hard to visualize the connections and is often obscure.

Sustainability has to start with the real intention of wanting to make lives better for all species and not just humans, even if this does not seem possible. If you see the earth merely as a source of raw materials, food, shelter and sources for industry, you have already missed so many answers to life which the earth contains and this means you have lost a very vital connection to life.

Sustainability is rooted in this connection…..get connected to life. Fill your worlds, not with more goods but with good intentions and choices and be committed. Make time to do the research. We are only passing through, so let go, shed, do not be afraid. Losing everything, sometimes you gain so much more, including a real understanding of who you are and some self respect.

Give a little context to life and sustainability by exploring what it may mean to live with all species. This is possible we just need to find out how. Presented with this evolutionary challenge, I hope we can rise to the occasion by drawing from within because we are human beings. Life did not begin with us and it will not end with us. The earth has the capacity to continue – we do not. We are fragile and this is our only protection, a protection that we cannot recreate.

Often it’s so easy to forget that Earth is in space and while we strive to reach other worlds, we are ultimately out here…in space…and we are protected, so protected we don’t often even think about this and this is the best luxury of all, to be nurtured, protected, fed, clothed and sheltered. Imagine a world where we have to hide from being hit by asteroids because we have no atmosphere.

While we have the most amazing capabilities to adapt and change our environments, this should be kept within an understanding of our spatial limitations….but this is hard…. and could prove to be the ultimate challenge of all. To miss, ignore and misinterpret what it means to live on the earth is a real shame, it’s a unique experience.

This is a service that the earth provides. To be sustainable seems a small price to pay.
