Lake Natron, Most poisonous Lake

Medusa is a well-known Greek mythological figure with snake-like hair that can turn people to stone with a single glance. Although Medusa may be a myth, there is a place on Earth that is just as dangerous and could cause petrification - Lake Natron in Tanzania. The lake is situated near an active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai, which produces a unique kind of lava that is rich in sodium and potassium carbonate. This mixture of chemicals, also known as Natron, gives the lake an incredibly alkaline pH level of 10.5, close to that of ammonia. This composition turns the lake into an excellent preservative, causing birds and animals that enter and don't make it out to become calcified in a hardened, stone-like husk, much like the ancient Egyptian mummification process.

Despite the extreme danger, there is one species of bird that thrives in Lake Natron - the flamingo. The lake's toxic waters provide a safe haven from predators, making it an ideal flamingo nesting ground. Flamingos can drink fresh water from nearby springs or geysers, and if necessary, they can filter saltwater through special glands in their nasal cavities. Their strong stomachs allow them to consume toxic algae found throughout the lake.

However, the lake's high alkalinity makes it dangerous for humans. Depending on the season, the water temperature can reach up to 60 degrees Celsius, causing third-degree burns in as little as five seconds. Although humans won't immediately turn to stone upon contact with the water, drowning and remaining submerged in the lake could lead to the preservation of the entire body, much like mummification, due to the high alkalinity of Natron. Scavengers would also be unable to consume the preserved body due to the lack of decomposition. However, any open wounds or the eyes would sting due to the salt content.

In 2007, a group of wildlife videographers experienced the lake's toxicity firsthand when their helicopter crashed into the lake. One passenger was able to make it to shore and alert nearby Masai tribespeople, who quickly provided assistance. While surviving Lake Natron is possible, it is not recommended to take the risk. Despite the harsh environment, the lake can provide a sanctuary for certain animals, as demonstrated by the flamingo's presence.

The flamingo is well-adapted to Lake Natron's environment, with its unique features allowing it to thrive where other animals cannot. The bird's pink coloration comes from pigments found in the algae it consumes, which is toxic to other animals. The flamingo's long legs allow it to wade through the lake's shallow waters without touching the salt structures on the lake's bottom, and its long neck enables it to feed on the lake's plentiful supply of toxic algae without ingesting too much saltwater.

Although the flamingo is well-suited to Lake Natron's environment, it still faces challenges. Flamingos must build their nests on the lake's edge to avoid the toxic waters, but these areas are prone to flooding. The birds must also contend with the lake's fluctuating water levels and the danger posed by predators that have adapted to the harsh environment. Despite these challenges, the flamingo population at Lake Natron remains relatively stable.

Lake Natron's unique environment has led to the development of several rare and unusual species of plants and animals. One of these species is the Natron tilapia, a fish that has evolved to withstand the lake's extreme alkalinity. The fish is able to excrete excess salt through its gills and skin, and its kidneys are specially adapted to handle the lake's high pH level.
