Once upon a time, leather bags used to be a status symbol of the aristocrats walking with a smirk on their faces. If you had a leather bag back then, you were considered to be rich and worthy enough to be bowed before. But now, things have changed for several reasons. As consumers, we are becoming increasingly aware of the impact our purchases have on the environment and society. In recent years, whether buying leather bags is ethical and moral has been debated much. While leather bags have been a staple of travel, bags & luggage sections for centuries, is it time to reconsider our relationship with this material?

So, before you surf and shop and pay and go out, let’s explore if this is even required or not. We will explore the ethical concerns around buying leather bags and whether it is possible to buy them in a responsible manner.

The Issue with Leather Production

Now, you might question – what is wrong after all with leather bags? Well, if there is nothing wrong with it, then will you be able to use a bag made out of human skin? Of course, no. But the equation is not this simple and many factors get involved.

When it comes to leather production, a range of ethical and environmental concerns get tossed up alongside. One of the most significant issues is the impact on animals. Many animal rights groups argue that the production of leather involves the cruel treatment of animals, as they are often raised in cramped conditions and subjected to inhumane slaughter methods. While the mega corps deny these claims, animals still get hunted cruelly and slaughtered for their precious skin that get prize tags up to a million dollars. This greed-motivated hunting has led to the extinction of numerous animal species. Consequently, it has ultimately led to the disruption of the natural food chain.

Another concern is the environmental impact of leather production. The tanning process uses a significant amount of water, chemicals, and energy, which can contribute to pollution and environmental degradation. Also, the disposal of tannery waste has led to the contamination of water sources. Although these things do not concern you because you still must have access to clean drinking water, millions of people still lack it and suffer. Now, the question is, if leather can be produced ethically or not.

Can Leather be Ethically Produced?

Despite these concerns, it is possible to produce leather in an ethical and responsible manner. Some companies have implemented strict animal welfare standards and environmental policies to ensure that their leather is produced in a sustainable and humane way. However, no matter if the term ‘ethically sourced’ is put or not, leather is unethical anyhow. It is because the chain anyhow involves cruel animal slaughtering and hunting. Furthermore, the leather that must go and enrichen the soil for further life, does not reach its destination.

When it comes to buying leather bags, it is important to do your research and choose products that are produced in an ethical and responsible manner. What more? Always look for alternatives.

Alternatives to Leather Bags

Now, what alternatives are there to genuine leather bags? Some materials, such as cork, are vegan-friendly and have a similar texture and durability to leather. Additionally, there are many sites like Shopify, but free, that sell sustainable and ethical bags made from materials such as recycled plastic, organic cotton, and hemp.

Making a Conscious Choice

Whether or not buying leather bags is immoral and unethical depends on the individual’s values and priorities. While there are concerns about the environmental and ethical impact of leather production, it is possible to buy leather bags in a responsible manner. However, if you are uncomfortable with the idea of buying leather, there are many alternatives available. The key is to make a conscious choice and support products and companies that align with your values.
