Why, in the last few years, has self-sufficiency really taken off?...

The concept of self-sufficiency has gained increasing popularity among people of all ages and backgrounds. The idea of becoming self-sufficient may conjure images of a rugged lifestyle in remote areas, but the reality is that self-sufficiency can be adapted to fit a wide range of lifestyles and situations.

One of the main drivers behind the trend towards self-sufficiency is the growing concern about environmental issues, particularly climate change. Many people are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and live more sustainably, and self-sufficiency provides a way to do this by growing one's own food, using renewable energy sources, and reducing waste.

Another factor contributing to the popularity of self-sufficiency is the desire for greater autonomy and independence. In an age where people are increasingly reliant on external systems and institutions, such as supermarkets and energy companies, self-sufficiency provides a way to take control of one's own life and reduce dependence on others.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also played a role in the trend towards self-sufficiency. The pandemic highlighted the fragility of global supply chains and led to shortages of food and other essential items. As a result, many people began to take a more active interest in growing their own food and becoming more self-reliant.

Furthermore, self-sufficiency provides an opportunity to learn new skills and engage in satisfying and fulfilling activities.

The trend towards self-sufficiency is driven by a range of factors, including environmental concerns, a desire for greater autonomy, and a need for resilience in the face of crises. As more people embrace the idea of self-sufficiency, it is likely to continue to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of an ever-changing world.

One of the most popular forms of self-sufficiency is growing your own food. Whether you have a small balcony or a large garden, planting and cultivating your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs can provide a sense of satisfaction and connection to the natural world. There are many resources available to help beginners get started, from online tutorials to community garden programs.

Generating renewable energy is another form of self-sufficiency that is gaining popularity. As concerns about climate change and fossil fuel depletion continue to grow, many people are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and generate their own energy using renewable sources such as solar or wind power. This can involve installing solar panels, wind turbines, or other forms of renewable energy technology.

Reducing waste is another important aspect of self-sufficiency. This can involve reusing, recycling, and repurposing materials, and learning how to mend clothes, repair broken items, or create new things from old materials. By reducing waste, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also save money and resources.

Learning practical skills is also a key part of self-sufficiency. Many people are interested in learning how to do things for themselves, whether it's carpentry, sewing, cooking, or preserving food. By learning these skills, we become more self-reliant and less dependent on external services and products.

Finally, building community is an important aspect of self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency doesn't have to be a solitary pursuit; in fact, building community and sharing resources with others can be a powerful way to become more self-reliant and resilient. This can involve joining a community garden or co-op, participating in a tool-sharing program, or forming a neighborhood group to share skills and resources.

In conclusion, self-sufficiency can take many different forms, and there are many ways to incorporate it into your lifestyle, no matter where you live or what your interests are. By becoming more self-sufficient, we not only reduce our reliance on external systems but also gain a sense of empowerment and connection to the world around us. As more people embrace the idea of self-sufficiency, it is likely to continue to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of an ever-changing world.

Indeed so many factors go into this movement! I think an important one is that these old societal systems and programs we've relied on for so long are collapsing under the weight of modern issues. There's a real lack of faith (and evidence of such) that necessary repairs to these structures will be made.
