The giant said that he was always welcome to come, and that since the young man had served him faithfully for three years, as they had agreed, he would not now prevent him from leaving.

The young man took his six Portuguese coins and went straight to the kingdom of which his lover had spoken. He buried the money in a place near the king's palace. Then he went into the palace and asked to be the king's servant. He was employed as a groom to look after the king's horses.

After a time, he found that the King was always sad and unhappy. One day when the king came into the stable, there was no one there except the young man, who, with the king's consent, said directly to him that he wanted to know why the king was so sad.

'It's no use telling you,' said the King. 'Anyway, you can't help me.'

"You don't know," said the young man. "I know why you are worried, and I have a plan to pay you back."

The young man said that he would lend the king six cubits' worth of money, but the king had to promise that he would accompany him during the payment, and that he would then pretend to be one of the clowns in the king's palace and walk before the king. He may cause some trouble, and the king will be severely reprimanded, but he will take responsibility for it, and promise that no harm will come to the king.
