Climate, fauna, and economics might all be hidden on the same property.

What this makes possible

Land-use choices have been portrayed as trade-offs for decades. Preserve grasslands, marshes, and woods or turn them into mining, farms, and other economic development opportunities. New worldwide maps cast doubt on the notion that benefits for the environment will come at a financial cost.

Researchers discovered that most landscapes across 146 countries allow for significantly more compromise than anticipated. This simultaneously supports local economies and wildlife.

Reevaluating a trade-off

The study's team was directed by Stephen Polasky, a professor at the University of Minnesota (UMN).

In order to verify a persistent assumption, the team modelled the relationship between economies and nature. The common argument against combating climate change or preserving biodiversity is that they are too expensive.

Because its use determines how much carbon remains in the atmosphere and how many species survive, land is at the heart of both crises. According to a comprehensive analysis of the data, land use is the primary factor contributing to the loss of wildlife globally. One decision affects nature, climate, and income all at once because the same ground holds a large portion of the carbon that causes global warming.

Mapping the options

The team mapped the maximum potential of each nation's territory, a ceiling they refer to as an efficiency frontier, to determine what was feasible. Given its soils, climate, and current land usage, it represents the most that a country could accomplish all of its objectives at once.

Every length of land was graded on five potential payoffs. Two were natural: a location's capacity to store carbon and support life. The value of agriculture, grazing, and timber made up the remainder. The model included the cost of each transition because it is not free to switch land between uses. The end product was a map that showed the difference between each nation's current land yield and its potential.

Gains in both

Nobody had mapped those borders for almost every nation or determined how much each falls short before this investigation. It was difficult to miss the pattern. The majority of countries work their land well within the bounds of what is feasible, leaving gains unaltered.

The scale appears when the 146 nations are added together. Countries' land might store more than 200 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide if climate benefits were given top priority.

Farming and forestry could increase revenue by more than $350 billion if economic benefits were given priority. Neither benefit would come at the expense of the other. A nation might, on average, draw almost twice as much from one side without losing ground to the other.

Two paths ahead

These increases are driven by two types of change. The first rearranges the locations of activities, re-establishing forest on plots that support animals and store a lot of carbon but are not as profitable as farmland.

The second option is crop intensification, which encourages more food to be produced on already-farm land. An examination of the world's croplands delineated years ago revealed that fields in many poorer countries produce significantly less than they should.

Narrowing it results in more people being fed on the same acres without breaking any new ground. Where land is worked least effectively—typically in lower-income nations where there is potential for growth everywhere—both approaches yield the greatest returns. Richer countries have less room for simple gains because they have already exploited a large portion of their land's economic potential.

Haiti and Japan

The narratives presented by the country profiles differed dramatically. The researchers discovered that although Japan has depleted much of its natural resources, it still extracts almost all of the economic potential from its land.

In the other corner is Haiti. It has expended a comparable portion of its natural resources, but it receives substantially less in return—much less than what the same area could offer. A message of hope is conveyed by the contrast. A nation's economy is not doomed to fail if forests and soils are destroyed. It is not a long-term restriction, but rather a low return today. The outcome is determined by how the land is handled, not by how much of it survives.

Directing the funds

Financial development is the purpose of this type of map. The maps can be used by banks and lenders to determine whether initiatives will increase revenue while preserving habitat and storing carbon.

"We show people what's possible, and that tends to open their minds to thinking about a wider set of alternatives," Polasky stated. For him, altering the discourse is part of the worth. However, the image is incomplete.

The model does not completely account for people's propensity to prioritise short-term advantages over long-term benefits and only takes into account land, excluding rivers and lakes. Nevertheless, it is consistent with a study that suggests improving land management might provide a significant portion of the global climate solution.

What this makes possible

The globe now has a country-level estimate of how much more its land could produce, created simultaneously for 146 countries. It's a simple headline. The conflict between a healthy economy and a healthy planet is significantly less serious for the majority of nations than is often thought.

Instead of giving investors and governments a nebulous hope, that reading gives them a specific goal. The 30 by 30 initiative, which aims to preserve one-third of the world's land by 2030, can be used to identify areas where livelihoods and conservation coexist.

For many years, the two battles—development and climate change—were fought as though a victory for one meant a defeat for the other. This investigation, which is mapped over a large portion of the world, indicates that the two objectives are frequently more in line than previously believed. Acting was never as expensive as the rivalry claimed.
