Best Co-Workers

Living and working on a farm is so rewarding. We all work hard with no days off. We have fun, and love helping others in the community, as well as supporting our family. The co-workers are cows, goats, chickens, angora rabbits, dogs, and cats. Everyone has their own job. Without them, the farm would not run as well. We look after each other.

Rosie, our cow, is a Boss cow. She looks after and feeds the calves, even if the baby calf is not hers. She is a good mom. We have a big black cow, Maggie, and her baby, Chestnut. Rosie's baby is Hank, the bull. We are family. We love and support each other. We are all part of this family owned and family work farm.

The goats are great workers. They make us so happy and relieve stress. Always happy to see you, and they’re super cute. They help with the landscaping. They clean up grass and brush piles. They supply milk and leave us beef. The chickens are active. The Rooster wakes us up. The hens lay more than a dozen eggs a day. Which is how we make money. When we got them as babies they were so cute. Now they provide us with fresh eggs for breakfast every morning. The rabbits supply us with fiber and fur. We take that to the spinning wheel and make clothing and accessories. They are difficult at times to brush but you always have that co-worker. Then we have the dog.

Our dog sleeps on the job. When he wakes he lets us know if we have visitors. He is very sweet and the life of break time. He loves to follow me wherever I go. His name is Brutus, and wants us to share our lunch with him.

We have three great cats, Jack and Jill. We bought them at a shelter when they were 12 weeks old. They used to get along but Jack doesn't like his sister Jill to get close. They like, or tolerate, me picking them up and holding them. They take care of any unwanted critters. Then we have our black cat, Daliah. We also got her from the shelter. She is our inspector. She checks out boxes. If she can fit in it. She's happy. The three cats don't get along, so we keep them separated.

The farmer has his wife. She works hard supplying food, shopping ,laundry, cleaning, and cooking. It doesn't stop there. We are going to get a bolier chicken for meat ,and Turkey to have and sell for Thanksgiving and holidays. We are going to work with friends with pigs. They can help with landscaping too. That may supply us with pork. We were going to get alpacas. We changed our mind. They were rescued and need dental work.

We knew what we wanted, and we worked hard. We put up fences so the cows can mow the grass. If you take care of them, they will take care of you. We are team players. Need team players at work or the company goes down.

The way I look at it, we are all farmers. During the shutdown, many families had backyard chickens. Some are having a hard time getting rid of them and way too many eggs. I love eggs. It's like having breakfast out everyday for free. Then don't forget the garden. We all grow vegetables and herbs. That's all part of farming. It's all around us. Working on your tractor or trucks.

The best part of my day is when I wake up and see the best co-workers. They work hard and we love them for it.
