SIGIRIYA

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka. It was built during the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa as a fortress and a royal palace. The site is renowned for its remarkable frescoes, ancient ruins, and stunning architecture.

The fortress is located atop a massive 660-foot (200-meter) rock, which dominates the surrounding landscape. The rock is surrounded by a series of moats and gardens, which were used as the first line of defense against invaders. The palace itself was built on top of the rock and was accessed via a series of steep staircases and pathways.

One of the most famous features of Sigiriya is its frescoes. These are located in a sheltered area on the rock face and depict women in a variety of poses and costumes. The frescoes are believed to be the work of the king's personal artists and are considered to be some of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan art.

Sigiriya was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 and is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Visitors can climb to the top of the rock to explore the ruins and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
